Primary Purpose of Department:

The mission of the Department of Special Education and Child Development is to prepare highly effective and ethical professionals who have a positive impact on children, youth, families, community, and schools and who are successful in urban and other diverse settings. This mission is accomplished through teaching, research, and community engagement that lead to improved practice and by working in partnership with schools, communities, and university colleagues.

The goals of the Special Education and Child and Family Development programs are to:

Provide instruction at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels that models research-validated best practice and challenges learners to aspire to excellence.

Generate and synthesize knowledge through quality research that informs the preparation programs of the Department.

Provide genuine and meaningful service to the public schools and other service providers that informs the preparation programs of the Department.

The Department of Special Education and Child Development faculty strive to create an academic climate in which the dignity of all individuals is maintained. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, North Carolina's urban research university, has one of the most diverse student bodies in the University of North Carolina System and enrolls over 30,000 students across a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree
programs. The University is fast growing with new facilities and infrastructure, including a light rail line to Uptown Charlotte. Charlotte boasts a vast array of cultural and recreational opportunities and outstanding medical and community services to meet the interests and needs of a diverse population. The University is within the bounds of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), one of the largest urban school districts in the country. With CAEP accreditation and over 100 full-time faculty members, the Cato College of Education serves nearly 2,200 students through undergraduate and graduate programs, including five doctoral programs, and is one of the largest teacher education programs in the state. In 2023, the College established the Mebane Early Literacy Center to continue the legacy of the Mebane Foundation to be a national leader in teacher education and literacy innovation. The Special Education faculty have a long history of securing external grant funding, and the Department's grant procurement was ranked in the top
two at the University in 2022-2023. The Department of Special Education and Child Development currently includes 21 full-time faculty members.

Description of Work:

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintain scholarly productivity in research; seek external funds to support research activities. Teach and advise doctoral students and master's level students with an opportunity to teach undergraduate or graduate courses (face-to-face, hybrid and online). Mentor faculty; provide service to the field and profession; and participate in programmatic development of the Department and College.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

Required Qualifications: Candidates must: (a) have an earned doctorate in Special Education or a
closely related field from an accredited university; (b) currently hold a rank of Associate or Full Professor; © have a clearly defined research agenda and a record of research productivity (including data-based research in scholarly journals); (d) demonstrate the ability and/or commitment to secure external funding; (e) show evidence of graduate student advising and/or mentoring; (f) have taught courses at the college/university level; (g) demonstrate a record of service at the department, college, university, and community/national levels; and (h) have a consistent record of professional presentations at national and/or international conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:Preferences are given to candidates who: (a) demonstrate an extensive
record of external funding and research productivity; (b) have served on and chaired dissertation
committees; © have prior experience mentoring faculty; (d) advocate for the field at a national level (e.g., hold a leadership position in a national/international organization); (e) have experience as a teacher or a service provider in BK-12 settings; (f) have experience in teacher education preparation; and (g) have prior experience serving diverse students in BK-12 and/or college settings.
