Responsibilities
  • Enthusiastically embrace the College's mission, vision, and values.
  • Develop and implement visionary strategies to help build a world-class, collaborative, grant-funded, and vibrant research culture within the College, with a particular focus on biomedical and health-related fields, translational science, and community-based clinical research.
  • Promote engagement in interdisciplinary research across the College's faculty and externally with other individuals, organizations, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with members of the communities in and surrounding the College's six regional campuses, including healthcare partners, to involve them in the research process.
  • Oversee the College's Division of Research budget, more than $4.6 million, and personnel, including 25 full-time employees with five direct reports.
  • Serve as the senior administrator for the College's biomedical sciences graduate program.
  • Work collaboratively with the College's departments and programs, identifying opportunities for expanding the graduate program as well as opportunities for research collaborations and funding opportunities across the University and with other public and private institutions.
  • Actively participate in the University's / College's goal to develop FSU Health into a transformative program that will advance healthcare and contribute to scientific discovery in the Big Bend.
  • Facilitate in the operations of, and share in the oversight of, the multiple principal investigator team of the University of Florida-Florida State University Clinical and Translational Sciences Award Hub.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the College's strategic plan as it relates to research, scholarship, and research infrastructure, with an overarching goal to establish and maintain state, national, and international recognition for the College as a leader in research and knowledge transfer.
  • Provide strategic guidance in identifying and communicating opportunities for extramural funding and serve as the College's liaison to the FSU Office of Research.
  • Provide oversight for the College's internal grant and pre-award review mechanisms.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for research faculty professional development, including mentorship in research for junior faculty, with an overarching goal to grow the College's research portfolio.
  • Drive the College-wide vision for initiatives that recognize faculty for research excellence and that foster a research culture encouraging innovation and promoting entrepreneurship, economic development, and commercialization of intellectual property.
  • Implement policies, practices, and communications delivery channels to promote research best practices and integrity as well as ensure the regulatory compliance of research projects.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote dissemination of the College's research at College, University, national, and international meetings and conferences.
  • Ensure the continued implementation of the College's performance metrics for research that track productivity, extramural funding ratios and other key input, output and outcome indicators for research success.
  • Assess the College's research activities, processes, and infrastructure, including research facilities, and implement improvements / expansion when needed.
  • Provide overall supervision and administration for the College's research facilities/operations.
  • Participate in accreditation activities for the College, especially those relating to research.
  • Assist the Dean with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, MD/PhD) in biomedical science, medicine, the health sciences, or a closely related field.

  • At least 5 years of senior administrative experience in a complex higher education academic department or medical school.
  • Demonstrated broad research experience and an extensive record of scholarship, including external funding and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in building successful programs across a broad spectrum of participants.
  • Experience with federal government funding mechanisms and familiarity with the role of federal, state, local, and private organizations in funding research.
  • Scholarly accomplishments commensurate with a faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor, with potential for tenure upon appointment.
  • Demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service.
Preferred Qualifications

At least 10 years of broad research experience and an extensive record of scholarship, including external funding and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
