Job Description
Position Summary
The Postbac Teaching Fellow supports the development and teaching of new hands-on course models for CS intro courses and provides support for students and faculty inside and outside the classroom. In addition, the teaching fellow maintains and supervises the use of equipment in the HCI Lab and manages the purchasing and preparation of new teaching equipment for the HCI Lab, while providing technical support for teaching in the lab.

Primary Position Responsibilities
Teaching support for core intro courses:

  • Provide in-class support during lectures, enabling the use of active learning techniques during larger lecture sections.
  • Assist in grading so that students receive timely feedback on programming assignments.
  • Hold student hours to provide additional support for students while fostering a sense of community.
  • Assist with the collection and analysis of assessment data for evaluating these new courses.
Teaching support for courses taught in the HCI Lab: (CS320, CS325, CS366, independent studies):
  • Troubleshoot software and hardware issues in the HCI Lab teaching equipment.
  • Create and maintain instructional video tutorials and documentation for the HCI Lab teaching equipment.
  • Perform open technical demos and tutorials for students, faculty and staff.
  • Regular maintenance of existing teaching equipment, and the purchasing and installation of new equipment.
Performance Profile
  • Accuracy and reliability: accurate and reliable support during lecture including arriving to lectures prepared and on time and engaging with students during active learning sessions.
  • Timely teaching support: prompt delivery of graded feedback on programming assignments.
  • Equipment maintenance : the HCI Lab teaching equipment remains fully functional and is ready for teaching and student projects.
  • High-levels of service: effective in fostering a sense of community among students. High levels of service may be indicated by positive student feedback, increased participation in student hours, and an inclusive learning environment.
Supervisor Responsibilities
Mentoring the teaching fellow in transitioning from student to staff position, helping them to learn about graduate studies and possible teaching careers.

Education Required
The teaching fellow is a recent Wellesley graduate, who completed their BA with a major or minor in CS, MAS, or Data Science.

Experience Required
Completing CS111, CS230, or equivalent courses successfully.

Skills and Abilities Required
  • Programming skills: A deep understanding of computer programming languages, especially those relevant to the courses being taught (e.g., Java, Python, JavaScript).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: to assist in the classroom, mentor students, and hold student hours. The ability to foster a sense of community among students is important.
  • Technical skills: Familiarity with the usage and maintenance of the HCI Lab equipment
  • Data Analysis: the capability to collect and analyze assessment data for evaluating the effectiveness of new courses and teaching methods. This involves using data analysis tools.

It is important to note that our postbac teaching fellows are not intended to teach a section or a lab. By providing additional support inside (helping an instructor) and outside the classroom (grading, office hours, and TA management) they allow us to increase the size of our classes while maintaining active learning pedagogy, which we view as critical for inclusive excellence in CS.
