Nurse Clinician - Addiction Medicine - Department of Psychiatry

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Psychiatry is seeking a Nurse Clinician to function as a clinical expert and care coordinator for patients seeking recovery with a substance use disorder through the he UI Addiction & Recovery Collaborative (UI ARC). This nurse will collaborate with physicians, patients, families, and frontline teams across the UIHC enterprise. Additionally, this nurse will provide education, point of contact, triage, and continuity of care for patients receiving addiction treatment and/or recovery services from UI ARC (including inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services).

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
• Participates as a team member on the Addiction Medicine Consult Service, to provide initial and ongoing nursing assessment, patient education, family education, and care coordination.
• Collaborates care with other healthcare providers to discuss, assess, and resolve patient issues.
• Develops and coordinates patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and social determinants of health.
• Incorporates patient-centered care, shared decision making, and harm reduction principles to support patients with substance use disorder, at all points along the recovery continuum.
• Identifies and coordinates interventions and resources to support patient goals and desired outcomes.
• Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Documents/reports interventions and patient/family response.
• Administers injectable medications for the treatment of addictions.
• Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings.
• Serves as an advocate and liaison for patients after discharge, to facilitate successful transition to the next phase of substance use disorder treatment.
• Monitors EPIC Pool, shared email inboxes, and shared voicemail folders. Communicates with patient as needed on all requests submitted to UI ARC.
• Coordinates and leads support groups for individuals in recovery from substance use disorder.
• Participates in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Participates in formal and informal teaching with health care students.
• Serves as a preceptor for nursing students as directed.
• Participates in research utilization activities and integrates research findings into practice.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Classification Title: Nurse Clinician, PD14
Staff Type: SEIU, Allied Health Professional
Type of Position: Specified Term, minimum of 12 months with the possibility of extension

Percent of time: 100%

Required Qualifications
• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
• Must hold a current license to practice nursing in Iowa.
• At least 3 years of experience in behavioral health nursing
• Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders or mental health conditions.
• Knowledge of harm reduction principles
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team to achieve care goals and maintain effective working relationship with faculty, staff, and learners.
• Must be detailed oriented with evidence of good organizational skills, have good problem-solving skills with the ability to handle challenging or unexpected situations and find effective solutions, and ability to work in a self-directed manner.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable Qualifications
• Prior experience working with patients in a recovery environment.
• Experience providing patient education about substance use disorders, including harm reduction.
• Experience using motivational interviewing techniques to assist patients in moving through stages of change.
• Experience working with patients in a variety of treatment settings (e.g inpatient, outpatient, community-based settings).
• Experience administering long-acting injectable medications.
• Experience performing patient triage by phone and/or in person.
• Experience using Epic.
• Familiarity with University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics nursing policies and procedures.
