SUMMARY:

The Music Technology Specialist is responsible for managing the music technology lab (15 station Mac lab), project studios (three audio recording and post-production studios), as well as supervising student employees, managing equipment sign out, conducting workshops, recording and post-production of concerts, live-streaming concerts, training and supervision of student workers recording and post-production work, researching appropriate music technologies, maintaining equipment, support supporting Third Practice Music Festival and other music concert production.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management of Facilities, Equipment, and Student Employees:

  • Manage and maintain music technology facilities; including Music Technology Lab, Project Studios
  • Record and post-production for concerts and recitals
  • Live stream department concerts
  • Coordinate with Music Library and faculty on distribution of concert and recital recordings
  • Train and manage student workers for recording, post-production and lab support
  • Assist faculty and students in recording, audio editing, post-production work
  • Install computer hardware and software and manage repair for computers and audio equipment as necessary. Coordinate with IS as appropriate.
  • Update equipment inventories
Academic Support:
  • Support and facilitate the integration of music technologies in music department courses
  • Develop workshops and offer training on music technologies including notation, audio recording, post-production, audio editing
  • Conduct ongoing research on new/emerging technologies and assist faculty in developing proposals for equipment replacement and upgrades
  • Support department concert production that include audio and video technologies including student recitals, faculty concerts, Third Practice Festival and other events.
Technical Development:
  • Maintain and development skills with and knowledge of equipment, software and hardware related to audio recording, post-production and creative work with sound.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Attention to detail and strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Experience and proficiency in recording including digital audio workstations (Ableton Live, Logic, Pro Tools), recording hardware including consoles, preamps, microphones. Knowledge of appropriate microphone choice and effective microphone placement.
  • Experience in audio-post production including effective and appropriate use of plugins
  • Experience live-streaming audio/video
  • Knowledge of and experience managing Macintosh computers including updating operating system and installing software.
  • Basic video editing skills and experience
  • Knowledge of Dante audio networking
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a service-minded approach to interaction with students, faculty, staff, and departmental visitors
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments amidst frequent interruptions
  • Ability to take initiative on long-term or recurring assignments
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply University and departmental policies and procedures
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook. Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Pro or willingness to learn these or other software needed to perform job assignments.
  • Ability to learn to use Banner, Blackboard, and BOX
  • Web knowledge and experience
  • Ability to manage student workers, equipment sign-out, music labs and classrooms; to conduct ongoing research and develop justifications for equipment proposals; and to develop/teach technology-based workshops on an ongoing basis.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • BA or BM in music composition, music technology or other field within the digital/media arts preferred.
  • Prior related prior work experience preferred but not mandatory.
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • This position is limited term for one year (extension possible with approval)
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week; may require evening and weekend work for concert recording and production support
SALARY STRUCTURE:

Hiring Range: $17.00 to $19.00 per hour
