Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Participates and leads design, test, development and documentation of equipment modifications and component designs and modifications. Provides and/or reviews calculations supporting equipment modifications. Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing solutions with a focus on structural design and data analytics. Documents maintenance requirements for cars and major subsystems to ensure the safe and efficient long-term operation of the fleet. Is a project leader who can handle multiple projects simultaneously. Provides Engineering support for supplier and part approval process. Has knowledge of the organization, processes and customers. Has in-depth knowledge and experience of AAR requirements (load scenarios) for performing structural analysis using FEA. Can quickly develop practical repair procedures for field repairs in structural areas. Has experience with doing maintenance and modification on rail cars. Has basic knowledge of multiple specialty components and other related disciplines with in Engineering and Research.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, revise and implement Maintenance Instructions and Job Plans. Assist TTX divisional shops and Field Maintenance locations with implementation. Use advance data analysis techniques to support business decisions on what maintenance is required. (25% of Time)
  • Leads projects or project steps within a broader project. Has accountability for ongoing activities and objectives. Keeps project plans up to date as the program and project progress. (15% of Time)
  • Develop structural repairs for field failures using FEA as applicable. Review outside FEA reports to ensure they are using proper analysis techniques and comply with AAR requirements. Provide structural engineering feedback on how to address failures or areas of concerns. (10% of Time)
  • Investigates major modifications of existing equipment for a defined service, create specifications, and participates in the implementation of the modification program while working independently with minimal guidance. (10% of Time)
  • Independently investigate reported equipment and component field failures utilizing problem solving skills, billing, trackside detector data, and other information sources, produce engineered solutions, and direct the solution implementation. (10% of Time)
  • Discover and investigate the enhancement potential of equipment components, determine value, direct field tests, communicate results and recommend course of action. (10% of Time)
  • Implement improved vendor communications to facilitate the coordination of design, production, and maintenance of vendor components of rail equipment. (10% of Time)
  • Investigate currently unused technology to be used to enhance the performance of new and existing equipment. (5% of Time)
  • Participates in cross-functional teams supporting the tactical and strategic goals of the Equipment Department. (5% of Time)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required
    • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from a 4-year university.
    • 5+ years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of Mechanical Engineering education and experience.
    • Proficient with computer software such as Windows, MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Trained in AutoCAD and 3-D modeling software (Solidworks is preferred).
    • Familiar with welding, welding standards/codes, fabrication, and manufacturing processes
    • Proficient in multitasking and work on multiple projects and tasks on a regular basis. Experience with project managing multiple projects with external firms simultaneously.
    • Ability to read, analyze, interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
    • Ability to write formal engineering reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, directors, AVP, clients, customers, and the general public.
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and provide recommend a practical course of action.
    • Proficient with interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
    • Experienced with Engineering Tools (FEA, MATLAB, etc.) to investigate and provide engineering solutions. Has experience with performing FEA and interrupting external FEA reports.
    • Familiarity with AAR - MSRP, Field Manual, Office Manual and AWS D15.1.
    • Strong understanding of AAR requirements (load scenarios) for performing structural analysis.
    • Experience with digesting, manipulating, and drawing conclusions from large data sets of information. (Advance Excel features, SAS, Tableau, etc).
    • Familiarity with designing, developing and enhancing electro-mechanical systems and mechatronic devices.
    • Ability to travel overnight to the field environment to support the business requirements of this position. Travel may be up to 35% of time.
  • Preferred
    • Experience with ANSYS FEA
    • Knowledge and experience in the railroad industry
    • Familiarity with North American Rail Industry parts, products and processes
    • Knowledge of large castings and the casting process
    • Ability to apply mathematical analysis to problem solving

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

Work is normally performed in a general office environment with moderate noise level. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and sit (remain stationary within work area) and use hands to finger, handle, feel and reach. The employee is occasionally required to move about (stand, walk) and climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Correctable vision required to allow for close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception capabilities and the ability to focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). The employee must occasionally lift and/or transport up to 10 pounds in the office.

Travel is frequently required to Company locations, railroad service yards, and vendors. These locations are often situated in industrial areas that will require the use of personal protective equipment, a safety briefing, and awareness of surroundings at all times. These industrial areas may have a high volume of railroad traffic and require being ambulatory with correctable hearing and visual capabilities which includes close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). These industrial areas can be loud, near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places, with vibration, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Must be able to climb under and onto railcars. The employee must occasionally lift and/or transport up to 50 pounds.
