Lab Technician

This lab technician will be performing and assisting others in performing laboratory operations involved in the sampling, testing, recording, and reporting of results for asphalt emulsion and binder products used in construction of asphalt pavements. Job duties and responsibilities will normally be shared between these technicians or split when covering different shifts.

This person must have a flexible schedule to assist in covering lab operations over an extended range of hours during the season and will be expected to operate on a schedule that falls between a typical first and second shift during the summer months. Typical hours are first shift that extend to include second shift and occasional weekend work. This person will also be involved in assisting in plant operations during the off season and when needed.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Take samples of asphalt emulsions and binders from storage tanks for testing.
  • Perform testing on asphalt emulsions and binders in accordance with standard methods and practices as directed.
  • Thoroughly document work performed in the lab by completing test records and recording results in an electronic data system and / or generating test reports as required.
  • Perform cleaning duties including cleaning of glassware, lab equipment and lab environment as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with and provide support to other technicians in the lab and occasionally plant personnel and operations to help meet goals and objectives set by management.
  • Perform or assist in other plant duties as needed.
  • Always work in a safe and responsible manner.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Higher education or lab experience considered a plus.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and can complete duties in a self-directed manner without supervision.
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks with competing deadlines simultaneously.
  • Able to learn and follow written methods and procedures, and document demonstrated procedures so they can be followed and performed.
  • Knowledge of or experience following ASTM, AASHTO or other standardized testing methods considered a plus.
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
