The Role

Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

E86 CVN Nuclear Propulsion - E86 Process Engineering Class Support Group is looking for a talented and dynamic Engineer Designer 3 to support iDS initiatives for the construction and maintenance of CVN78 Class Aircraft Carriers. This position is for a senior level project lead and subject matter expert designer to serve the crucial role in the development and implementation of innovative solutions for designing, building and sustaining the most advanced aircraft carriers in the world.

The incumbent can expect the following duties:

  • The review of ShipAlt drawing and instruction planning products, performing onboard shipchecks, integrating with planning yard services, construction hold-ups (CHUs), and supporting new IDS products and processes such as hydro and certification Visual Work Instructions (VWIs).
  • The successful candidate will be considered the subject matter expert in designing major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
  • The successful candidate for this position will possess a strong knowledge of, and significant experience with, the Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) process Newport News An extensive knowledge of 3D Product Model processes and procedure is desired.
  • Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, Siemens NX, Inventor and AutoCAD.
  • Responsible for working complex technical problems and providing solutions which are highly innovative.
  • Acts as an advisor to management and customers on system designs and project development.
  • Supports teams in pursuit of future state visions, development and standardization of design practices, development of design tool functionality, and training of the workforce.
Must Have

Bachelor of Science Degree and 5 years of related experience;
4 years of related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree;
8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree;
12 years of non-exempt, Manufacturing, Military, Shipbuilding or Trades experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree.

  • Skills for organizing, overseeing and leading projects and teams that solves emergent issues across the organization. Assignments are often self-initiated and course of actions and desired results are understood and managed by this candidate
  • A wide and comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of the job which allows them to contribute to the development of new principles and concepts in the design community. Serves as a subject matter expert in a specific design discipline or in the processes and tools used by the design community
  • BS in Engineering Design Technology preferred
  • 10+ Years working in CATIA and Teamcenter/NX
  • Strong understand of the Division of Responsibilities between PPPY and the shipbuilder
  • 5+ years of waterfront liaison experience
  • Shipcheck experience
  • Technical SME for iDS and the requirements of SSP-E1235
  • Provide E86 with expert consultation/guidance for iDS
