Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE: The Co-op Energy Engineer will be primarily responsible for assisting energy engineers, project managers, and project executives who are actively engaged in developing technical energy solutions for our clients. For this position, candidates in any field of engineering will be considered. The day-to-day tasks for this position are highly variable, and job responsibilities will increase commensurate with the co-op's ability.

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

With the assistance of our engineering staff, the Co-Op Energy Engineer will:

  • Develop and validate load profiles for existing and proposed energy-intensive facilities.
  • Review conceptual and schematic level design plans for proposed energy generation or load centers.
  • Identify opportunities for distributed energy generation at client facilities. Distributed generation solutions may include cogeneration, biomass, wind, solar, energy storage, or other technologies.
  • Performing detailed energy modeling to determine the appropriate technology, size, and operational strategy for proposed distributed generation facilities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of currently operating or proposed energy facilities.
  • Assist with on-site energy audits and reports.
  • Provide evaluation assistance with decarbonization projects and studies.
  • Assist with the development of testing and commissioning procedures and reports.
  • Review and validate electric utility bills for high-profile cogeneration facilities.
  • Create and maintain energy and water budgets for select clients.

The duration of this co-op is 6 months. The position involves the ability to travel to our Cranston and Providence, Rhode Island project sites as well as additional project sites throughout the United States. All travel costs and expenses are covered.

The work environment is a professional, business casual office setting located close to mass transit in the Boston's Financial District. This position will include field work and/or travel.

Also reporting to our Cranston, Rhode Island job site at the John O. Pastore Center periodically.

Qualifications

Key Qualifications

  • Candidate for a Bachelors or Masters of Science in Engineering, preferably with a concentration in energy or power systems.
  • Introductory level knowledge of energy systems, including electric generating prime mover technologies, waste heat utilization systems, chilled water generation systems, and the integration of these technologies into one highly-efficient energy delivery system

Valued Experience

  • Previous experience with consulting engineering firm(s) focused on applying proven components to a prescribed set of requirements.
  • Previous experience with energy efficiency, engineering, or finance at an electric or natural gas utility company.
  • Familiarity with centralized and distributed electric generation systems fueled by both conventional and renewable sources.
  • Knowledge of building mechanical and electrical systems, including boilers, chillers, electrical switchgear, emergency generation, and building management systems
