The Data Science Director, Patient Safety is responsible for defining and leading projects that apply of sophisticated quantitative expertise in advanced mathematical disciplines to develop innovative data science solutions to derive safety insights. The candidate will maximize the value of data from clinical trials, internal and external safety databases, real-world data from EMR and claims using statistical, visual analytics, and modelling techniques.

This will include the ability to manipulate and prepare data (structured and unstructured) prior to analysis, the implementation of advanced modelling algorithms, the presentation of the results. Importantly he/she will typically engage directly with stakeholders in patient safety (PS) organization, understand important safety related problems, develop the appropriate analytics strategy, and communicate the insights with the relevant stakeholders. This role will partner with drug projects and other colleagues in our R&D organization to support pharmacovigilance analysis and prepare analytic responses to health authority questions. You will possess a blend of scientific domain knowledge and information retrieval skills. He/she will need to be able to manipulate and prepare information (structured and unstructured) prior to analysis, present the findings, and explain the insight. She/he will also be delivery focused and have commercial 'nous' to tailor the analytics approach to the business need and context to achieve optimal results.

  • Create and implement analytic solutions to solve patient safety problems: apply statistics, machine learning, and software skills to deliver key insights form data or build self-service tools
  • Collaborate closely with Global Patient Safety and PS TA teams to develop an understanding of priorities and early insight into changing needs
  • In partnership with other members, translate unstructured and complex safety questions into the appropriate data science problems, predictive models, statistical tests, and analytical solutions
  • Identifies opportunities to apply emerging academic research approaches to established business use cases
  • Apply data wrangling by extracting, transforming, cleaning, and integrating relevant data for model development
  • Apply good programming practise, such as, documentation, validation, version control, etc.
  • Implement right methods for data analysis and interpret the results in close partnership with PS stakeholders
  • Using expert knowledge of public and proprietary content sources, develop complex search strategies and analyse information to provide insight for regulatory, pharmacovigilance and drug safety experts.
  • Act proactively and reactively to respond rapidly to safety related queries from internal colleagues and external partners including Regulators and be familiar of the challenges around handling clinical information.

Essential to the role:
  • Ph.D. degree and relevant postdoctoral fellowship in data science, applied statistics, or related quantitative biology field.
  • Expertise in programming languages, especially R/ Python and SQL.
  • Experience with clinical research study design, project management, data collection and analysis, and dissemination and reporting.
  • Understanding of widely used statistical methods and machine learning algorithms
  • Experience with visual analytics tools, cloud computing, and version control
  • Ability to learn fast and implement analytics solutions by selecting the right set of tools
  • Proven record of implementing analytical solutions to address research/business problems.
  • Experience of working in a matrix environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and proficient in English, both spoken and in writing

Desirable to the role:
  • Prior experience supporting patient safety in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company
  • Expertise with safety signal detection, calculation of background rates and observed-to-expected analyses
  • Experience in clinical biostatistics and the development of statistical analysis plans
  • Familiarity with the application of machine learning, feature selection and predictive modelling
  • Experience of enabling innovation and managing change involving many stakeholders
  • Highly developed analytical and conceptual thinking, with the ability to understand multiple, complex business needs and to prioritize them
  • Record of research publications, academic research engagement and deployment of academic research tools within an enterprise environment
  • Experience in working across different geographic locations, organizations, and cultures and exerting Influence Without Authority
