The Graham School provides continuing Liberal Arts education programming for adult learners.

Job Summary

This position uses specialized knowledge and breadth of experience to provide instructional support to students and/or teachers. Guides teachers in individual instruction, assessment practices, consultation, or other academic services. Leads preparation of lesson plans, course outlines, assignments, or training in the design and development of assessment instruments.

The Cyril O. Houle Chair may not concurrently hold another full-time position at the Graham School or other unit of the University of Chicago where a potential conflict of interest exists. As the face of the Basic Program and as a representative of the Graham School, the Chair should conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Responsibilities

  • Works with Director of Academics on course plan for each academic year, including managing curriculum review of Years 1-4 as needed and confirmation of book editions.
  • Teaches a minimum of 4 1.5-hour sections per quarter in Core Curriculum, both onsite and online. Teaching hours are not included in the 20 hours/week of the chair position and are paid via instructor agreements.
  • Oversees development of new sequences and manages curriculum reviews of existing Alumni Sequences.
  • Serves as primary point of contact between Graham instructors and staff, including scheduling and running of instructor staff meetings.
  • Participates in recruiting, hiring, and orienting new staff in coordination with the Director.
  • Appropriately addresses any conflicts or complaints involving students and/or instructors, working with program administration or Dean of Students to resolve them.
  • With Program staff, responds to student issues and problems (email, phone, in person), makes recommendations on sending issues to Dean of Students.
  • Organizes lecture series, including scheduling, recruitment or speakers, planning lecture topics, and hosting the lectures.
  • Chair may not concurrently hold another full-time position at the Graham School or other unit of the University of Chicago where a potential conflict of interest exists. As the face of the Basic Program and as a representative of the Graham School, the Chair should conduct themselves in a professional manner.
  • Directs work of students and/or teachers throughout the academic year. Interprets issues and provides expert consultation, training, and/or professional advising.
  • Leads staff meetings and a range of social and academic program events.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

  • Background teaching in the Graham School Basic Program.
