This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

Classification Title: Administrator III

Position Salary Range: $11,535 - $17,302 per month

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $14,000 - $15,000 per month.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

About the Department/Position:

The Student Affairs Leadership Team is generative and collegial; we are an intentional learning community.

Under the administrative direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President of Student Success and Belonging is responsible for the development of policies, procedures, programs, and services that will promote, encourage, and support access, persistence, and success. The incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating access and retention strategies with an emphasis on closing the equity gaps for first-generation, low-income, and traditionally underserved populations. The Associate Vice President will be responsible for developing and maintaining programs that support the CSU Dominguez Hills Graduation Initiative 2025. In collaboration with Academic Affairs, namely the AVP of Academic Advising and Career Development and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the AVP will help to increase retention and timely graduation, enhance belongingness, and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

The Associate Vice President of Student Success and Belonging will provide an energetic and informed vision for all departments in the unit. The incumbent will provide leadership, guidance, and strategic direction for the Educational Opportunity Program, the Office of First- and Second-Year Experience, Toro Guardian Scholars, and the Culture and Identity Centers (Latinx Resource Center, Black Resource Center, Queer Culture Resource Center, Asian Pacific Cultural Center, Toro Dreamers Success Center, and the Women's Resource Center).

The incumbent is a member of the Vice President for Student Affairs' senior management team, which includes the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Life and the Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management, the Associate Vice President of Health and Well-Being, the Associate Vice President, the Director of Athletics, the Director of Educational Partnerships, and the Director of Operations. The AVP will work closely with the leadership team and colleagues in the Division.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Fosters partnerships with Success Centers in each College to develop retention, persistence, change readiness, and graduation. Uses data and best practices to inform strategies. Evaluates plans, in partnership with colleges, to determine current effectiveness, emerging best practices, and opportunities for data-informed change.
  • Partner with Academic Affairs to advance the EAB and other related initiatives to enhance student success. Collaborates with partners across the institution, including academic colleges, Financial Aid, University Housing, University Advising and Testing Center, Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Culture and Identity Centers, Student Health Services, Student Psychological Services, Basic Needs, University Effectiveness, Planning, and Analytics. Enrollment Management, Student Affairs Assessment Office, and others to leverage a coordinated student success network to intervene with and assist students.
  • Fosters partnerships with Success Centers in each College to develop retention, persistence, change readiness, and graduation initiatives.
  • Assists in developing logic models and implementing policies and procedures for all departments in the cluster. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates administrative protocols to ensure consistency in practice among all areas.
  • The AVP will work closely with other diversity-focused leaders and personnel across the institution, most notably with the Division of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice to advance intersectionality and uplift the multiple identities of students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience: Five years of experience in a related professional field supplemented by five years of experience managing diverse and complex programs working in a higher education institution. Experience with Academic and Opportunity Support Programs (e.g., Educational Opportunity Program and TRIO programs), student success best practices and/or retention initiatives in a university setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with higher education organizations and with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the sociological issues facing underrepresented, first-generation, and low-income persons in the university and in their communities.
  • Sound knowledge of cultural nuances, principles, sensitivities, and applicable concepts/theories that apply to the unique community that make up community.
  • Demonstrated leadership in academic support services.
  • Group and individual counseling techniques, ability to assess and implement intrusive advising techniques, and capacity to conduct effective group and individual training sessions with staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • The ideal candidate will be experienced, creative, compassionate, and a proven leader who has solid operational knowledge of and demonstrated documented success in leading and managing the major elements of this portfolio through an anti-racist, student-ready, and culturally relevant retention framework.
  • Demonstrated evidence in the ability to motivate and mobilize a cross-functional team toward common goals is critical.
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding and utilizing student success research and literature for first-generation and low-income populations, as well as the ability to utilize proven approaches for effectively assessing developmental education courses and learning support strategies.
  • Highly desirable qualities include knowledge of and dedication towards best practices, as well as demonstrated leadership ability in working with a range of professional staff, faculty, parents and supporters, senior administrative colleagues, other campus constituents, and external organizations.
  • Experience in writing federally sponsored grants for educational purposes.
  • Experience handling administrative problems and solutions involved in operating retention and completion initiatives.
  • Experience supervising and managing the delivery of student success services efficiently; effectively synthesizing information from various sources to be used in management decisions.
  • Experience and demonstrated evidence of progressively responsible administrative experience that includes the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience and demonstrated evidence of working with Faculty, Chairs, Associate Deans, Undergraduate Deans and Associate Vice Presidents in Academic Affairs
  • Demonstrated expertise in project planning, development, and implementation.
  • Knowledge of California State University budget regulations, ability to make difficult resource allocation decisions; ability to manage limited resources and deliver maximum student services.
  • Sound knowledge and demonstrated experience in analyzing data; reasoning logically to draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Train and evaluate the productivity and performance of other employees; analyze situations and take connective action.
  • Communicate in a professional and effective manner - in both written and oral forms; and establish and maintain effective working relationships that promote professionalism and mutual respect in a multicultural and diverse academic community.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and devise innovative solutions; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle the demands and requirements of senior-level management in higher education.
  • Strong skill in communication, management, and leadership skills.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, including spreadsheets and database software.
