Description:

Accurately interprets and transliterates from English into American Sign Language (ASL) and Spanish Language medical, mental health and general information for staff, patient care support, patients and families. Assists physicians, nurses and social workers in the assessment of situations as related to the culture of the patient. Maintains compliance with all hospital policies and procedures, particularly patient confidentiality and informed consent, in compliance with the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and the NCIHC Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

Position Responsibilities: Helps facilitate successful delivery of services to patients who communicate via ASL and or Spanish Language. Assists with written documents as required in patient encounters such as assisting patient with filling out forms, and explaining written medical instructions and medication schedules. Maintains accurate and detailed documentation of all interpreting encounters and refusals by patients who choose to use a companion to interpret. Supports department operations by answering the phone, taking requests, and calling patients to confirm appointments. Assists department with special projects as assigned. Actively engages in professional development to maintain current skills and knowledge of environmental trends, clinical developments and industry changes.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Education:
Required: High School Diploma plus training acquired through work experience or education
Preferred: Associates Degree OR equivalent training acquired via work experience or education

Minimum Experience:
Required: 1-2 years of previous job-related experience
Preferred: 3-5 years of previous job-related experience
Minimum Experience Details: Must have experience in medical interpreting.

Licensure/Certifications:
Required: ASL Interpreter License - Advanced Level, National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or equivalent
Preferred: ASL Interpreter License - Masters Level
