ARPA-H Biomedical Engineer: Imaging Research Technical Advisor
ECS Corporate Services

Washington, District of Columbia

ECS is seeking a Biomedical Engineer: Imaging Research Technical Advisor to work in our Washington, DC (Hybrid) office. Please Note: This position is contingent upon [contract award OR additional funding].

Job Description:

Are you a passionate, innovative biomedical engineer with expertise in optical engineering and/or ultrasound technologies ready to tackle one of the biggest challenges in science?

Precision Surgical Interventions (PSI) aims to help all surgical procedures reach their intended goal with no errors and no need for re-operation. The program aims to develop solutions to two major surgical problems associated with the removal of a solid tumor: tumor edge visualization and critical anatomy visualization.

The PSI program, a groundbreaking initiative by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), seeks talented and driven Senior Biomedical Engineers to join our team. In this crucial role, you will serve as a scientific and technical advisor-providing support and thought leadership to the delivery team responsible for research and development for revolutionary approaches that will provide surgeons tumor edge visualization and critical anatomy visualization during a real-time operation.

About the PSI Program: Every year, nearly 2 million Americans are newly diagnosed with cancer. For solid tumors, surgical removal is often the first option but tissue visualization is a challenge. Detailed medical imaging may be available before surgery, but there are not tools that let surgeons see nerves, blood vessels, and lymph ducts during the operation. The PSI program aims to change that by supporting the development of technologies and devices to improve cancer localization, healthy structure localization, and outcomes during surgery.

What you will do:

  • Support program managers in development of new research methods, concepts, and operational processes
  • Serve as scientific and technical advisors for cutting-edge research projects focused on improving tumor edge visualization and critical anatomy visualization.
  • Support ARPA-H performers and scientists via your expertise in medical imaging technologies (optical engineering and/or ultrasound technologies) and experience with commercialization strategies, pre-clinical and clinical research, and/or technology transfer requirements.
  • Provide strategic assessments of methods and technologies related to the development of virtualization technologies and devices for testing and optimization.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians to translate research discoveries into real-world applications.
  • Play a key role in supporting performers within the fields of oncology, surgery, imaging technology, and other disciplines seeking to meet the visualization needs of surgeons, in service of improved patient outcomes.

Required Skills:
  • Possess at least 12 years of experience in relevant research and development areas, including optical engineering and/or ultrasound technologies
  • Experience with commercialization strategies, pre-clinical and clinical research, and/or technology transfer requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, analyze data, and write scientific reports.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with scientists, engineers, and oncologists from diverse backgrounds.
  • Passionate about innovation and driven to make a real impact on human health.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required.
  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field with a strong focus on oncology research and development.
