About Student Involvement:

Student Involvement's (SI) mission is to create experiences and spaces that encourage students to discover their interests and find a sense of belonging. Student Involvement is comprised of the Offices of Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) and Student Center & Activities (SCA).

About the Position:

The Student Involvement Coordinator manages the Student Senate Comptroller's Office, charged with the finances of the Student Senate and 200+ student organizations. The Coordinator works with the Student Involvement team to advise and support student organizations, their events, and to encourage student involvement. Financial duties include supervision of student staff, monitoring compliance with University accounting and fiscal policies, handling of financial activity/transactions, training for organization leaders, and providing financial support to Student Involvement staff members. The Coordinator will advocate for students, their organizations, and be a resource and advisor. The Coordinator is a member of the Student Involvement team and works in service of the departmental mission, unit goals, and divisional strategic plan.

Essential Functions:

  • Administrative Oversight of Comptroller Functions: Manage accounting software (Sage), review banking transactions for accuracy, perform positive pay verification, reconcile discrepancies, report on financial data using system reports.
  • Student Supervision: Hire, train, and supervise student staff including management of job tasks and schedules with an emphasis on it being a learning experience. Advise the Senate Finance Chair in their work with the Comptroller's office.
  • Reporting and Auditing: Responsible for annual preparation and reporting of Student Association financial statements. Point person for internal control evaluation done each year in conjunction with the annual audit of SMU. Responsible for managing the information needed for the annual Agreed Upon Procedure (AUP) engagement.
  • Clerical Tasks: Provide administrative support to the Student Involvement team including journal entries, purchasing, university check requests, processing gifts, making deposits, assist in check distribution, and more.
  • Communication and Training: Respond to stakeholders regarding account questions. Communicate policies and expectations around proper usage of the Comptroller's office. Communicate on behalf of the office. Be the primary point of contact for communication with SMU's Central Comptroller.
  • Advising: Encourage a vibrant campus life and student community through co-advisement of one or more Student Senate committees.
  • Teamwork: Serve as an active and engaged member of the Student Involvement team and supports the office mission. Support the implementation and realization of the goals and learning domains in the Student Affairs strategic plan. Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree is required. A minimum of two years of professional work experience is required including administrative duties.

Basic knowledge of fund accounting and bookkeeping-related work experience and/or education is strongly preferred.

Experience working in a college or university setting is preferred.

Must have a strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. Experience with Anthology and Sage is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, especially with college populations. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must have excellent organizational skills including time management and planning. Must be able to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced, changing environment.

Must be meticulously attentive to detail and produce highly accurate work. Must appropriately handle financial responsibilities.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify varied issues and provide creative approaches to resolution.

Must have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
