Job you will do

Typical Day in the Life

Candidates will be exposed to a variety of multi-state income/franchise tax issues ranging from tax planning, restructuring, due diligence, audit defense, audit management, taxability research, general compliance, writing and correspondence. The candidate will be responsible for assisting with income/franchise tax engagements including day-to-day consulting, development of ideas, strategies and opportunities, and implementation of these ideas. The candidate will also assist with management and communication of SALT Thought Leadership and developments to the internal firm and external clients. This position can be located in any of our metro locations.


A typical day as a State and Local Tax Income/Franchise Manager/Senior Manager might include the following:

  • Address state and local tax issues for individuals, corporations, partnerships and LLCs.
  • Prepare and deliver written and oral tax advice on a variety of multistate income, franchise, and gross receipts tax topics.
  • Multi-state income tax planning, compliance issues and income tax accounting.
  • State tax controversies, notice responses and audit defense including audit protests.
  • Assist with both buy and sell-side state aspects of transactions and restructurings
  • State Income, Franchise, and Gross Receipts tax return review and guidance, voluntary disclosure projects, credits and incentives, and recovery studies.
  • Client communications, project scoping, budgeting, staffing and billing.
  • Assist with SALT Thought Leadership management for firm and external clients, including preparation and publication of written pieces and delivery of presentations
  • Attend professional development and training seminars on a regular basis.
  • This role is also open to Phoenix, AZ, Minneapolis, MN, Las Vegas, NV, Oklahoma City, OK, Fargo, ND, and is remote eligible
Who You Are
  • You enjoy keeping up-to-date on the ever-changing tax industry's regulations and policies.
  • You possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • You possess leadership and management skills and enjoy working in a team environment.
  • You possess comprehensive technical skills as it relates to multi-state taxation and tax research, experience with unitary filings, apportionment , tax base rules, and pass-through entity taxes and procedures.
  • You have experience with due diligence, voluntary disclosure negotiations, audit defense, credits and incentives, and MS Excel modeling.
  • You are highly skilled at identifying and addressing client needs; building, maintaining and utilizing networks of client relationships and community involvement; communicating value propositions; managing resource requirements; managing project workflow, budgets, billing and collections; and preparing and/or coordinating complex written and verbal materials.
  • Experience with sales and uses taxes, property taxes, and/or escheats a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with flow through entities a plus, but not required.
  • In additional to all of this, you have 8 or more years of experience with multi-state income/franchise taxation, Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (required); Masters of Taxation, MBA, or LLM in Taxation, or JD preferred.  You also have a valid CPA or are an actively licensed attorney (required).
Must be authorized to work in the United States permanently without the requirement of sponsorship at any point in the future.
