The School of Communication has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Sr. Advisor, Academic to work at the Coral Gables Campus.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Sr. Advisor, Academic provides a wide range of academic advising services to undergraduate students, including: recording program activities, serving as a liaison between students, faculty advisors and other University departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advising and support: Advising students in a variety of majors, as well as general advising during peak periods. Maintaining regular interaction and following up with students and maintaining relevant records. Working with faculty advisors and department chairs on issues related to their students. Responsible for registration, drop/add and withdrawal for each student, including data entry into University systems. Approving academic course selection and equivalencies for students registering to study at other institutions, including study abroad programs and coordination of special programs such as UM-DC. Providing students with a variety of resources and assisting with major/career explorations in collaboration with Toppel Career Center and other University departments. Completing credit checks and working with academic departments to clear students for graduation. Entering course substitutions or waivers approved by department chairs.
  • Communication: Communicating information about fall and spring advising and registration to continuing students, including meeting schedules, advising guidelines, and compliance with requirements for graduation. Maintaining academic integrity and confidentiality when with students, parents and officials from the University and other institutions. Writing student letters of recommendation and other letters as requested. Collaborating with academic advisors from other institutions regarding student transfers, academic requirements and to attend advising workshops. Updating new students' landing page on the School of Communication website. Providing submissions for advising notes newsletter.
  • Academic records and technical support: providing data for and assisting in the creation of reports to intercollegiate organizations, the University and School leadership. Managing advisor center in the online registration system, including updates to majors, minors and add cognates for all advisees.
  • Orientation, workshops and recruiting: assists with coordination of fall and spring orientation events, including materials and handouts. Representing the School at Admissions Open House events, including the Majors and Minors Fair. Planning orientation for new Communication Honor students, assisting Honors Director as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum two years of relevant work experience; three years of related work experience in higher education preferred. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
Skills:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Knowledge of digital registration, degree-audit and other advising programs preferred.
