Position Summary: Provides full-time, quality outpatient and inpatient clinical speech language pathology services to all patient age ranges and diagnoses within the State of Alaska's SLP scope of practice. Includes frequent collaboration with medical providers and may include LTC coverage, home visits and village travel. Incorporates evidenced-based medicine into patient plans of care. Exemplifies professional conduct, patient care ethics and respect for cultural diversity when rendering patient care. Modifies patient care plans appropriately, using age-specific and patient-specific considerations. Supports the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation's mission statement..."Working Together to Achieve Excellent Health."

The SLP is responsible for evaluation, planning, organizing, directing and carrying out a treatment plan prescribed by a referring physician in the Inpatient, Outpatient, Village Health or Emergency Department setting.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Knowledge of speech, language, social communication, cognitive communication and swallowing diagnostics and therapeutics for all ages and types of patients and the ability to monitor a patient's status in all of these areas.
  • Ability to communicate therapeutically with staff, medical team, patients and families.
  • Ability to provide direct patient care in a variety of settings.
  • Possess the ability to provide care for patients' age-specific, cultural, physical and psychosocial well-being.
  • Position Qualifications:

    Minimum Education: Must have a Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited University Program approved by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

    Minimum Experience: No minimum clinical experience required but is preferred.

    License, Certification, Registration: Current Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) administered by ASHA. Current Alaska Speech Language Pathology license in good standing or ability to obtain Alaska License administered by the Alaska Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology. Current BLS.

    Equipment/Tools: Office equipment (i.e. computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine). Hospital-based: Standard Speech and Language Pathology assessment and screening tools. Village-based: Usually a treatment table, desk and chair are provided. Pathologist brings out what is needed for patient care.

    Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret medical literature, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to compose patient care documentation and medical correspondence in a timely manner. Knowledge of rehab therapy materials, equipment operation and basic maintenance. Ability to communicate effectively with medical staff, peers and administrative personnel. Ability to communicate effectively with members of a different culture who may or may not speak English. Ability to function as a team member.
