Senior Tax Accountant

Main Office (MOS)

Our Tax team is looking for a Senior Tax Accountant to oversee the accurate and timely filing of all property, sales, use, hotel, and other state and local tax and business returns for Sun Communities' entities.

JOB DUTIES

  1. Oversee the administration and processing of all property, sales, use, and hotel tax compliance roles and activities, remittances and reporting requirements for all Sun locations.
  2. Review and ensure accuracy of all returns, worksheets, payments and accrual calculation for the remittance of all property, sales, use, and hotel taxes.
  3. Complete sales, use, and hotel tax registrations and license renewals; maintain a listing and copies of all licenses, registrations, resale certificates, and exemption certificates.
  4. Supervise Sun's property software tools to ensure property tax bills are properly paid and accrued for financial and accounting reporting purposes.
  5. Prepare and/or review annual property tax budget calculations and quarterly accrual adjustments for financial and accounting reporting purposes.
  6. Maintain state and local sales, use, and hotel tax rates within Sun financial systems; updates as necessary.
  7. Communicate and work closely with 3rd party tax consultants for all property tax appeals.
  8. Prepare and/or review responses for outside taxing authority information requests.
  9. Work closely with other team members on audit defense requirements, as assigned.
  10. Conduct periodic audits; work with outside vendors, IT, Accounting, and Internal Audit to ensure tax is correctly calculated and remitted on all applicable transactions.
  11. Troubleshoot tax inconsistencies requiring timely investigation, abatement and resolution.
  12. Research property, sales, use, and hotel tax requirements for acquisitions in new jurisdictions; document research and make recommendations to management for implementation of new sales, use, and hotel taxes.
  13. Prepare and/or review technical memorandum with respect to sales & use and property tax issues.
  14. Coordinate with administrative team members to track and file required corporate annual reports, fictitious name and Doing Business As ("DBA") filings, in order to maintain good-standing status.
  15. Assist IT department with tax reporting requirements for the implementation of new software
  16. Other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Accounting
  • Minimum of 5 year experience researching, preparing and filing Sales and Use Tax returns for multiple states
  • Prior experience with public accounting at a large firm or large multi-state work experience, preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices
  • Excelled computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
