Senior Project Engineer, Electrical Controls

For the last 100 years, our engines, generators and UPS products have powered homes, hospitals, lawn mowers, stadiums, and everything in-between. The Senior Project Engineer, Electrical Controls will be a key member of a team of engineers responsible for the design, develop and implementation of electrical components, systems, and software to operate associated hardware for engines and engine control systems for Kohler engine platforms.

  • Electrical validation and verification testing of supplier products. 70% of work will be tied to developing software and algorithms development for engine controls, using MATLAB/Simulink software for model-based implementation into hardware.
  •  Member of electrical project team concentrating on engine control systems focusing on fuel injection systems, electronic governor controls and associated diagnostics.
  •  Lead role in identifying, developing, calibrating, and implementing control software for Kohler engines fuel injection and electronic control systems via model-based software platforms and tools. Some coding in C++ may be required for certain functions.
  •  Develop and execute test specifications including software verification plans, test procedures and test environments.
  •  Support development and testing of related engine electrical components and systems.
  •  Lead software strategy development and release from requirements to validation.
  •  Identify and specify appropriate tools to test and implement designs
  •  Work closely with electronic controller suppliers to implement software into final product
  •  Develop, code, analyze, review, debug and implement software for applications
  •  Develop and implement custom features using Simulink/Matlab software or program code.
  •  Lead implementation and use of Hardware in Loop (HIL) systems
  •  Provide system updates for performance tuning, improvement, balancing and usability
  •  Understand and support software modeling and simulation to develop concepts.
  •  Integrate software with existing systems
  •  Software testing and quality assurance
  •  Perform functional testing
  •  Evaluate and identify new technologies for implementation

Skills/Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Computer Science/ Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on controls or embedded system development and implementation.
  •  3+ years' experience in automotive, powertrain, or other commercial vehicle application software development, management, and implementation.
  •  Direct ASCET/INCA, MotoHawk/Mototune (or similar platform) experience.
  •  Two or more years MatLab/Simulink/Stateflow experience (Modeling, simulating, and analysis). TargetLink experience a plus. Skilled in use of electronic test equipment (oscilloscope, meters, dataloggers).
  •  Adherence to a defined software development process.
  •  Makes appropriate technical decisions using decision support tools and critical thinking including risk/reward ratios and critical pathing.
  •  Background in engine controls and the operation and implementation of electronic drivers, sensors, and components is a plus.
  •  Knowledge of fundamental programming concepts and methodologies as a basis for applying specific frameworks to develop and maintain software is a plus.
  •  Background in verification and validation such as RTRT, Tessy, Python, CAPL or similar is a plus.
  •  Software-in -loop/Model-in -loop validation is a plus.
