The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). The Wells Center houses more than 200 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

Research projects in this laboratory will focus on characterizing the function role of co-regulators recruited to islet-enriched transcription factors in the beta cell with an emphasis on understanding how their interactions are influenced by diabetes pathogenesis. This research makes extensive use of molecular biology including cell culture propagation, RNAi gene modulation, Western blotting, real-time PCR, CRISPR, immunofluorescence, lentivirus preparation, and significant amount of animal research.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists the Principal Investigator (PI), senior Research Technician, and graduate students in conducting research focusing on islet beta cell function and diabetes development within the Wells Center for Pediatric Research.
  • Responsible for mouse colony management, including tail tip and genotyping.
  • Responsible for intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests, and collection of serum from unrestrained mice.
  • Performs postmortem acquisition of mouse tissues, including fixation, embedding and sectioning.
  • Responsible for daily monitoring and data acquisition: This will entail monitoring rodents that have undergone procedures and tracking experimental outcomes. Some outcomes include: blood draw & complete blood counts, necropsy & harvest of tissues, and measurement/documentation of tumor progression.
  • Conducts tissue culture experiments including knockdown/knockout experiments (siRNA/shRNA/CRISPR), qPCR, ELISA, Western blotting and flow cytometry.
  • Prepares official data reports and distribution to investigators.
  • Ensures institutional compliance records are accurate to maintain core compliance, such as IACUC, Biosafety, Laboratory Safety, and Radiation Safety.
  • Responsible for preparation of research reports, maintenance of laboratory equipment records, and maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Operates and maintains specialized software and laboratory equipment, including software updates and equipment repairs; maintains supply inventory and ordering process.
General Responsibilities
  • Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results.
  • Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments.
  • Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training.
  • Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management.
  • May train junior-level staff.
  • May help plan experiments or short-term goals.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

The salary range for this position is $37,000 - $42,000. Salary determination is based on experience, skill level, education, and training.
