Department
IU POLICE DEPARTMENT (UA-PD-IUBLA)
Department Information
Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.
Department Information
The Cadet Officer Program, normally two years in length, allows full-time Indiana University students to work in the criminal justice system and in a law enforcement agency while pursuing their degree. Completion of the Cadet Officer Program, which includes the Indiana University Police Academy, provides comprehensive and unique law enforcement training which, coupled with the university's educational programs, produces a highly qualified, experienced, and educated law enforcement professional.
The IUPD Cadet Officer Program consists of three distinct, independent phases - Cadet Phase (also referred to as the Cadet First Year Experience), Recruit Phase and Part Time Officer (Class II) Phase. Each phase has specific requirements of students participating in the IUPD Cadet Officer Program depending on their status as Cadets, Recruits or Part Time Officers (Class II). This program is unique in that Recruits that graduate the Indiana University Police Academy are then commissioned as certified police officers in the State of Indiana and moved to Part Time Officer (Class II) status for the Indiana University Police Department where they will continue their training with the Indiana University Police Department and academic pursuits with Indiana University. Satisfactory performance must be maintained in each phase in order to matriculate through the program. Participation in the IUPD Cadet Officer Program is generally a two year (four semester) commitment, however, depending on the candidates future graduation date from Indiana University, the commitment may be 18 months (three semesters).
