Job Description

Role Summary

The Managing Attorney is the primary liaison between the firm's attorneys and the courts. The Managing Attorney provides legal expertise and guidance to attorneys and legal assistants on court rules, practices, and procedures, and has primary responsibility for all US litigation docketing, calendaring and deadline calculation, as well as filing and serving court papers in both federal and state courts in New York and other jurisdictions in which our attorneys practice. The Managing Attorney sets the strategic direction for and manages a first-class team of litigation professionals comprising the Managing Attorney's Office, which is responsible for filing and serving court documents, advising attorneys and legal assistants on compliance with court rules, practices and procedures, maintaining a centralized docketing and calendaring system for litigation matters across the firm's U.S. offices, and designing and implementing best practices and procedures to ensure minimal risk of missed litigation deadlines or rejected court filings. The Managing Attorney works closely with the firm's Knowledge & Research team, including our Litigation Knowledge Management Attorney.

The Managing Attorney position presents an exciting opportunity for a highly qualified and motivated individual to dynamically lead the firm's Managing Attorney's Office and to define its future by applying expertise and innovative solutions to meet the litigation needs of our attorneys and clients.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide advice and guidance to attorneys and other legal staff on court rules and practices, civil procedure, filing, service of process, and deadline calculation
  • Maintain expert knowledge of rules, procedures, and practices of federal and state courts in New York and other jurisdictions in which our attorneys practice
  • Monitor and advise attorneys and legal assistants of changes and updates to rules, procedures, and practices of federal and state courts in New York and other jurisdictions in which our attorneys practice
  • Maintain and oversee a centralized case management/docketing and calendaring system for litigation matters across the firm's U.S. offices with the assistance of a team of professional clerks and staff
  • Implement and manage effective practices and procedures for litigation docket and calendar management for proceedings in federal and state courts
  • Implement and manage effective practices and procedures for the filing and service of court papers in federal and state courts
  • Review (personally or by delegating to professional staff in the Managing Attorney's Office) court papers prior to filing to ensure compliance with court and judges' rules, procedures and practices
  • Undertake period reviews of Managing Attorney's Office practices and procedures for effectiveness, currency, and compliance with industry standards and implement changes and improvements as needed
  • Arrange for provision of daily or other periodic reports to attorneys concerning new cases commenced in New York state and federal courts and other specified jurisdictions and/or pertaining to specific areas of law
  • Supervise and manage the professional clerks and other staff comprising the Managing Attorney's Office, including defining their job responsibilities and roles, delegating tasks to and among staff members, ensuring adequate training and supervision of staff members, and periodically assessing the performance of staff members
  • Periodically assess new technologies for litigation case management, docketing and calendaring, deadline calculation and related functions performed by the Managing Attorney's Office
  • Coordinate with the Litigation Knowledge Management Attorney to fulfill requests for precedents, templates, and forms for various litigation documents
  • Prepare and manage a budget for the Managing Attorney's Office
  • Review and approve invoices and cash reimbursements for expenses incurred by the Managing Attorney's Office

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
  • Excellent knowledge of the New York court system
  • Strong familiarity with New York court personnel, rules, procedures and practices
  • High level of proficiency/familiarity with automated docket management platforms
  • Proficient with legal research technology, including but not limited to Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg, and other research platforms
  • Proficient in searching and retrieving information from court-related databases (e.g., Courtlink, PACER, eLaw, CourtAlert, etc.) and other on-line sources of case information
  • Strong understanding of litigation practice and knowledge of available and required procedural mechanisms for achieving desired strategies and litigation outcomes
  • Strong team management and leadership skills
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to communicate well at all levels within the firm and build effective internal and external relationships
  • Strong sense of accountability and responsibility, desire to take ownership of projects, identify issues and proactively suggest solutions
  • Interest in identifying, designing and implementing innovative solutions and practices within the areas falling under the Managing Attorney's purview
  • Flexibility to work remotely, travel and work extended hours as needed

Education & Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor degree required
  • Admission to the New York Bar and in good standing
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a litigation attorney or managing attorney/clerk in New York City
  • Participation in bar associations a plus
  • Familiarity with the Managing Attorney's & Clerk's Association and/or National Docketing Association
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
