LifeMoves and Operations-Food Services are seeking experienced individuals for the position of Lead Cook to perform a variety of work, which may include preparing and cooking a variety of dishes in large quantities; checking portioning and garnishing of food, and ensuring that it is served correctly and according to instructions; operating and cleaning a variety of kitchen equipment; calculating ingredients needed; receiving and storing food; training new cooks; mentoring students, and/or interns; supervising the work of and working alongside client helpers, assisting with menu planning and recipe development; and cleaning the kitchen and dining room.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following

  1. Plans and prepares foods in accordance with the Wellness Policies and Procedures
  2. Order food from Second Harvest Food Bank, use donations from Partners and purchases food and supplies necessary to prepare menu.
  3. Plans meals far enough ahead to minimize the need for food substitutions; when substitutions are necessary, purchases and serves food of equivalent nutritional value.
  4. Prepares nutritious meals in such a way that minimizes loss of nutrients and ensures the foods taste good and look appealing.
  5. Inspects and tastes food that is brought in from Meal Providers and donated from Partners.
  6. Maintains established standards of sanitation, safety and food preparation and storage as set by the local and state health departments; maintains an orderly, sanitary, and safe kitchen.
  7. With the guidance of the Food Service Manager, modifies menus and recipes and prepares foods accordingly.
  8. Shares duties and collaborates with the other Cook(s) on different shifts for efficient functioning of food service program.
  9. Assures the proper care and maintenance of all food service equipment; identifies equipment needs for food preparation and service and assists in purchasing as needed.
  10. Cooperates with and participates with team to ensure kitchen/food service runs smoothly 7 days a week.


Other Duties
  1. Clean items used in the kitchen such as dishes, pots, pans, containers, carts, and equipment.
  2. Clean facilities including sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing work areas such as floors, pantries and warehouse, and trucks; empty garbage cans.
  3. Assist with supplies and deliveries including signing for, bringing in, and/or storing items.
  4. Encourage clients to make use of programs like CalFresh, Snap, WIC to access food
  5. Contribute to the food service team by cross training for all positions.
  6. Attend and participate in trainings and other continuing education, career, and professional development opportunities.
  7. Participate in general staff meetings, 1:1's and other meetings and events planned by the Food Services Manager.


Position Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) a plus
  • 5 year+ of experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen, which has included the preparing and serving of food, and the cleaning of kitchen equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to ensure food is always kept safe by following food safety sanitation guidelines
  • ServSafe Manager Certification Proficient and/or Culinary Degree
  • Computer skills and overall "tech-savviness."
  • Professional experience in dietetics or nutrition related field a plus
  • Must be able to pass background check
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience as an effective team player
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds safely and keep up with the physical demands of the job
