Job Summary
Working under general supervision of higher-level personnel, the Health Information Technician performs a variety of technical tasks to support the management of health information and data integrity within an electronic system in addition to management of paper medical records.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Requests, receives, and processes health information (including diagnostic images) within the electronic system, validates and processes release of health information requests of both paper and electronic health system.
- Assembles, files, and reviews health information system and documents for completeness and enters medical record information into the hospital information system, including uploading medical record items (including images) into the hospital information system.
- Updates client, patient, and referring veterinary information within the hospital information system.
- Retrieves and maintains records per established policies. ◦ Retrieve records for routine use and special projects as needed. ◦ Retrieve and reactivate medical records from microfilm. ◦ Purge records as necessary under the guidance of supervisor.
- Performs other related duties as assigned. ◦ Provides deficiency reports to clinicians. ◦ Answers routine medical record and health information system questions per established policy and procedures.
Additional Physical DemandsNormal office setting. Allergies to hay, straw, or animal dander may cause discomfort based on location within the College of Veterinary Medicine. Position involves handling boxes containing records and reaching for records on high and low shelving.
Minimum Qualifications1. Any one or combination totaling eighteen months (18 months) from the categories below:
A. coursework in a health-related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
◦ 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
◦ 60 semester hours or an Associate's degree equals eighteen months (18 months)
B. work experience in the preparation and/or maintenance of medical records in a health care facility or program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks appropriately.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3856 - Health Information Technician position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. This is a bargained position and as such, the salary is driven by the collective bargaining agreement. The entry-level salary for the Health Information Technician classification is $20.718/per hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
