Position Summary: Responsible for coordinating Selfhelp’s City, State, and Federal advocacy efforts to advance the organization’s policy priorities.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Register as a lobbyist in NYS and complete all required NYS and NYC lobbying reports for Selfhelp. If applicable, track non-NYS lobbying efforts and report as needed. Coordinate internal advocacy efforts with Selfhelp’s registered lobbyists as well as Program Directors. This includes scheduling and attending budget meetings, coordinating letter writing campaigns and letters of support to relevant officials, assisting with related press events, and writing/delivering testimony.
  • Support Program Directors and Selfhelp’s registered lobbyists by providing budget one-pagers, tracking awards, writing thank you letters, and offering internal trainings on lobbying and advocacy.
  • Participate in relevant advocacy group meetings that impact Selfhelp’s programs and future planning, including HSC, LiveOn, UJA, HCA, and more.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with elected officials and their staff with the goal of securing additional government support for Selfhelp programs and advocating on behalf of our programs and clients. Represent Selfhelp at meetings and events, with the goal of acquiring information and cultivating relationships.
  • Track relevant hearings and coordinate Selfhelp’s response, including writing and delivering testimony and supporting relevant advocacy efforts.
  • Coordinate with Program Directors and registered lobbyists for annual budget requests including but not limited to, NYC Council discretionary funding applications, Borough President funding, and State representative awards.
  • When needed, act as the liaison between an Elected’s office and Selfhelp.
  • Attend briefings that clarify government actions and, when applicable, help Selfhelp form liaisons with other agencies with similar goals.
  • Perform other duties as needed or requested.
  • Adhere to organization’s standards by completing annual mandatory trainings in a timely manner on topics including – but not limited to – Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, IT Security Awareness, Compliance, OSHA, HIPAA and any other training the organization may deem necessary in regards to regulatory compliance or good business practices.
  • Supports organization’s mission by striving for excellence in all aspects of their job with a focus on positive interpersonal relationship with co-workers.
  • Adheres to the organization’s policy in regards to absenteeism and appearance.


  • Job Competencies & Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree, with minimum three years’ experience in advocacy, government, or government affairs at a non-profit.
  • Superior writing and oral skills, and ability to communicate effectively.
  • Position will require some amount of local travel to program sites where press and elected officials will be covering events. Must be comfortable and able to get around NYC and Long Island.
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Excellent customer service skills with a focus on treating clients with respect and dignity
  • Able to multi-task and work independently with a great attention to detail


  • Working Conditions/Physical Demand: Business Office Environment and/or remote with phone and computer use.

    To ensure the safety of our clients and staff, all new employees must be fully vaccinated prior to their start date. Upon acceptance of a conditional job offer, candidates who are not already vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol. Employees may be eligible for a medical or religious exemption from the vaccine; those employees who are approved for a medical or religious exemption must submit to weekly testing in accordance with Selfhelp’s COVID 19 testing policy.
