Position Summary: Serve as a GED Instructor for individuals with disadvantages and barriers to employment with a strong emphasis in mathematics for successful completion of GED, and other industry sector skill development. Goodwill’s Longview Work Opportunity Center provides case management, training and support to youth (16 – 24 years of age) and adults. The individuals we serve often present with multiple barriers to employment. Our programs strive to prepare and assist individuals with disadvantages for educational attainment and for jobs that lead towards career development.

Open Doors Youth Reengagement is a program created by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) that provides education and services to older youth, ages 16-21, who have dropped out of school or are not expected to graduate from high school by the age of 21.

Salary: $22.00 - $25.00 Per Hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The GED Instructor responsibilities Includes the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Use a variety of classroom management techniques to enhance the learning environment and promote self-direction.
  • Teach vocational skills courses that reflect the needs of the labor market and in-demand sectors.
  • Collaborate with program staff to promote student success
  • Adhere to program requirements for daily attendance and data tracking and reporting
  • Assist in educational and service placements
Meet OSPIs Requirements for Open Doors GED Classes

Deliver and maintain instructional curriculum designed to meet the OSPI “Open Doors” requirements for GED attainment for Goodwill students; manage Open Doors compliance and relationships with contracting school districts in regards to classroom operations.

Build and Maintain Rapport

An ability to gain rapport and relate in a sensitive manner with youth of multi-racial and multi-cultural backgrounds; Interact in a positive manner with program staff, school district administrators, intervention specialists, truancy, juvenile justice, and students

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:
  • BA Degree in Adult Education or closely related field
  • Teaching Certification recognized by Washington State
  • Classroom experience as a GED preparation teacher; emphasis on GED Math preferred
  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment as well as working with little supervision
  • Ability to provide effective instruction through a virtual delivery model
  • Exceptional analytical, judgment, decision-making and communications skills
  • Superior coaching, leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build understanding and concensus

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position will be supervising paid and volunteer Teaching Assistants.

Cultural Competency: Demonstrate cultural competence; specifically, awareness, attitude, knowledge, willingness and skills to work effectively with a culturally and demographically diverse population

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as textbooks, job descriptions, computer applications, etc. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and average. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, number operations, number sense, geometry, data analysis and, statistics.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge Microsoft Office products, specifically Word and Excel and PowerPoint.

Other Skills and Abilities: Comprehensive understanding of all aspects of GED Instructor

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Washington State Driver’s License required and/or very reliable transportation.

Other Qualifications: Self-motivated; resourceful, creative; high integrity; problem solver; looks to resolve issues; positive can-do approach; and ability to build effective working relationships.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear and type. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
