JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the HTM Manager, the Field Service Biomedical Equipment Technician is responsible for installations, repairs, regular maintenance and calibration of a specific modality of medical equipment at the component level. May offer guidance to Biomedical Equipment Tech I and II staff. May offer in-service and individual training for equipment users on subjects such as electrical safety, proper operation and care of the equipment. Will monitor the work of outside vendors to ensure quality standards are met.

 

WHAT IS EXPECTED (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

  • Performs installations, regular maintenance, repairs, and calibrations on assigned medical equipment to ensure proper operation and function.
  • Performs all assignments in a competent and timely manner according to current policies and procedures.
  • Monitor’s service provided by outside vendors, and thus responsible for quality control of service provided.
  • Establishes equipment baselines, performs inspections and evaluations, interprets test results and makes recommendations to solve performance deficiencies.
  • Installs, repairs and calibrates most classes of medical equipment at a component level.
  • Performs planned maintenance and electrical safety inspections as assigned.
  • Uses diagnostic service software appropriate to the equipment being serviced.
  • Assists in the evaluation of new equipment, accessories and supplies.
  • Inspects incoming equipment for compliance with codes, standards, and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Works with new hires and cross-trains on systems and equipment to ensure proper operation of equipment and techniques for testing, calibrating, operating and troubleshooting biomedical systems and equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains files of supporting literature for each piece of medical equipment, such as the manufacturers technical literature, reference standards, specifications and other documents necessary to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory agencies including TJC.
  • Assists in writing detailed purchase specifications for new equipment.
  • Accurately and legibly accounts for productive time using the departments computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Assists with the administrative record keeping responsibilities of the department, such as work orders, maintenance history records, PM and safety inspections, repairs, reports, and repair parts inventory; as well as any necessary reports to ensure accurate recording of activities for code and regulatory purposes.
  • Processes work requests and turns in completed work requests in a timely, results oriented and professional manner.
  • With management approval uses the electronic system to order necessary parts, devices, etc. to properly repair or complete assigned work orders.
  • Uses department hardware and software to electronically process and close work orders and PM assignments.
  • Document’s time and expenses in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensures proper care of equipment and tools issued for maximum safety and productivity and adheres to all personal safety requirements.
  • Diligently maintains all tools and equipment in clean, safe, working order. May recommend new equipment or equipment upgrades and review possible new capital expenditures.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of related parts to perform assigned duties.
  • Maintains technical skills and required certifications to perform job duties.
  • Adheres to all safety requirements and wears the proper Personal Protective Equipment required by the job.
  • Responds to emergency situations to ensure employee, patient and facility safety.
  • Champions overall safety in the department.
  • Reports possible safety issues and recommends appropriate changes.
  • Complies with OSHA, and other local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Adheres to BSWH and the Support Service Departments policies and procedures including appropriate attire and grooming.
  • Works to actively meet and exceed the performance improvement goals set by the department and or BSWH and all quality improvement targets.
  • Willing to serve on departmental and/or BSWH committees or focus groups as requested and needed.
  • May be asked to advise healthcare management on biomedical equipment and serve as a member of committees on Risk Management, Environment of Care, Safety, or other appropriate groups.
  • Interacts in a friendly effective manner, builds relationships, and demonstrates a high level of cooperation and customer service.
  • Communicates effectively with the Clinical Engineering manager and other Biomedical Equipment Technicians on a regular, formal and informal, basis to discuss possible concerns or problems with the Clinical Engineering department and/or any medical equipment.
  • Performs other position appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional and courteous manner.
  • Coordinates and participates in special projects as assigned, such as new equipment acquisition purchase planning; development of bid specifications; analysis of vendor proposals; installation planning; acceptance testing; renovations; equipment upgrades; and equipment disposal.
  • Reviews the outcome of preventive maintenance actions and makes recommendations to management staff concerning the need to make changes to the PM schedule frequency, procedures and/or data documentation forms.
  • Recommends and develops new equipment PM and incoming (acceptance) testing procedures.
  • Provide leadership and managerial oversight to personnel as assigned.
  • Attends routine and special meetings, such as Environment of Care, construction status, equipment pre-purchase evaluation and implementation.
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotation.
  • Responsible for the competency assessment and training Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record for the last 5 years
  • Must be able to travel between all Baylor Scott and White facilities as assigned
  • Must be able to stay overnight when traveling over 2 hours in any one direction, when deemed necessary by HTM management
  • Must maintain the assigned Baylor Scott and White owned vehicle in accordance with BSWH policy
  • Must make every effort to protect and secure the assigned BSWH vehicle and contents at all times
  • Must comply with all state laws and parking regulations while operating the assigned BSWH vehicle
  • Must accurately maintain a truck inventory of parts, tools and test equipment on a monthly basis
  • Must participate in the on-call rotation for the specified specialty or HTM geography as assigned
  • Must possess a fully functioning smart phone, which BSWH will provide a stipend for, to respond to all calls and work orders
  • Must be able to cover small expenses due to travel, for which BSWH will reimburse based on BSWH policy for reimbursable expenses

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES Education:

  • Associates Degree in biomedical equipment technology or electronics or equivalent training experience required Training and Experience:
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in Bio Medical Engineering, healthcare preferred International Certification Commission certificate preferred
  • Maintains a safe driving record Solid knowledge of computerized systems: recordkeeping, PM, work order systems, timekeeping, etc.
  • Abilities: To learn various departmental and BSWH software programs
  • To complete and maintain any licensure or certification(s) required by the position.
  • Possess strong technical, mechanical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Physically able to reach, lift, climb, crawl or otherwise see and work in tight and/or dim places.
  • To interact and communicate with all staff and management in English in a positive and professional manner.
  • To communicate appropriately verbally and in writing using the English language.
  • To comprehend instructions, correspondence, memos and other forms of verbal and written communication.
  • To read and follow instructions.
  • To deal with difficult situations, resolve issues and concerns in a professional manner.
  • To work and accomplish tasks in a stressful, fast-paced environment.
  • Equivalencies: HS Diploma and 7 years of experience / Bachelor’s and 3 years of experience

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ADDENDUM:

  • Cert BioMedical Equipment Tech Preferred
