Job Summary
The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital Farrier will perform duties related to corrective/therapeutic trimming and shoeing of client and University of Illinois owned or managed horses. This work will occur in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital located in Urbana, Illinois, at Midwest Equine in Farmer City, Illinois, and as an ambulatory service for farm calls. The Farrier will collaborate with Veterinary Teaching Hospital services to provide comprehensive patient care and student instruction in equine medicine and surgery. The Farrier will work to coordinate Farrier Service operation with service personnel and will participate in initiatives that enhance the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's position as a leader in this field.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clinical Service
    • Perform equine corrective/therapeutic trimming and shoeing on conscious and anesthetized horses; including forging, nailing, gluing and application of horseshoes.
    • Lead and assist in teaching techniques of the farrier trade to students.
    • Collaborate with veterinary personnel to perform and evaluate lameness exams on horses.
    • Provide trimming and shoeing service for clinic horses used for teaching and research.
    • Support record keeping and billing processes for Farrier Service.
  • Research and Scholarship
    • Participate in collaborative research with College and/or University faculty.
    • Participate in outreach including organizing and participating in farrier demonstrations for open houses and other special occasions/projects.
  • Service Maintenance
    • Responsible for supply inventory in hospital and trucks.
    • Responsible for cleaning the shop and trucks.
    • Other duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
Work done in the Large Animal Clinic includes hazards such as: unpredictable animal behavior, forge work, use of chemicals in surgical hoof reconstruction, animal wastes, etc. Allergies to hay, straw or animal dander may cause discomfort based on the location with the College of Veterinary Medicine. Proximity to or contact with animals.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School diploma or GED
2. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience as a Farrier.
3. As required by the position to be filled, current license/certification consistent with vehicles, machinery, and equipment that is routinely used in the general occupational area.

4. Possession of a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified journeyman farrier credentials are preferred. Eligibility for certification will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to be around horses and other large animals.
  • Ability to understand and operationalize written and verbal guidelines.
  • Ability to multitask as well as provide complete follow through.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision on a daily basis.
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge of equine anatomy and behavior.
  • Ability to move 50 lbs. from one location to another.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle and possess a valid driver's license
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1502 - Farrier position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/26/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
