Description: Sourcing for a Director of Student Health Services - Permanent Position

Position Overview -

The Director of Student Health Services will oversee student health care and provide health and wellness education to students.

As liaison to local hospitals and community health resources, the Director will monitor the quality of services, collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, health center and hospital administrators, develop and review policies and procedures and ensure compliance with immunization and insurance regulations and mandates.


• Directs and provides health services and programs for students, and staff and faculty as needed;

• Oversees and manages COVID related processes and guidelines for all students;

• Promotes health through individual and group education, offering programs focusing on health

maintenance and wellness, illness and injury prevention;

• Develops and manages the health budget, maintains supplies, organizes and staffs facility;

• Develops working relationships with college departments, students, area health agencies and

collaborates with contractual health providers;

• Assess and treat patients, including follow-up care, as outlined in protocols, including appropriate

consultations and referrals, (said protocols are reviewed and co-signed annually by the Director

and the Medical Advisor);

• Actively promote and provide health and wellness education programs pertinent to college age


• Advise the Dean of Students and Vice President of Administration and Finance on the Student

Health Insurance Program;

• Oversee management of student health insurance programs and resolve issues as appropriate;

• Obtain and maintain health records for students, including immunization status, as required by the

Connecticut Department of Public Health;

• Administer immunizations as needed;

• Perform specific laboratory procedures, (e.g. throat cultures, urine cultures, pregnancy tests, pap

smears, STI's, cultures, wet preps etc.);

• Develop and manage the Health Services budget;

• Work collaboratively with the colleagues in the management of complex student health problems;

• Collaborate with additional University health clinics: Naturopathic, Chiropractic, Acupuncture,


• Collaborate with the Environmental Health and Safety committee on issues relative to industrial

hygiene and student safety in educational settings;

• Serve in the on-call rotation;

• Ensure the availability and maintenance of First-Aid equipment to studio areas, residence halls,

and other selected sites;

• Act as the coordinator, with appropriate authorities, on issues related to public health (i.e.

infectious diseases) and develop institutional responses, as needed;

• Make recommendations toward selection of the college-consulting physician; assists in contract

negotiations and oversee the care provided;

• Oversee the management and follow through on student Medical emergencies;

• May provide clinical experience for registered nurses enrolled in certain Master's Degree

Programs, preparing as adult or family nurse practitioners;

• Develop and maintain information systems for reporting relevant Student Health Service data;

• Collaborate with other personnel in performing epidemiological studies;

• Responsible for ensuring that the College is in compliance with all aspects of the health


• Assume other duties assigned by the Dean of Students.


• Bachelor's degree and five to seven years' of progressively responsible nursing/health education


• Connecticut Registered Nurse Licensure required;

• Experience as a college health care provider and familiarity with college age populations and

their developmental and health related issues are essential;

• Certified in Connecticut to practice in the expanded role; including public health and/or

experience in general health, gynecology and urgent care/emergency;

• Significant clinical experience (including public health and/or experience in general health,

gynecology and urgent care/emergency);

• Significant clinical experience with young adults;

• Three years progressive experience in delivering health programs appropriate to college students;

• Significant experience developing and administering department budget;

• Demonstrated experience in maintaining student health records and mandated health and privacy


• Demonstrated supervisory experience over support staff and other staff as necessary;

• Considerable knowledge and experience in the care of patients, the administration of

emergency/first aid treatment and triage practice method;

• Experience and sensitivity in working with an ethnically diverse student and staff population.

Preferred education and Skills: -

  • Certification in College Health Nursing and phlebotomy desired or must be willing to
  • obtain;
  • Master's degree in Public Health, APRN or MSN;
  • Prescription authority from the State of Connecticut;
  • Experience as a college health care provider;
  • Specialization in primary health care.
