Job Summary

The Director of Duality, the Polsky Center and Chicago Quantum Exchange's quantum venture accelerator-incubator, will be responsible for the operational management of the program as well as internal and external stakeholder engagement. The 12-month program supports quantum technology and enabling technology startups through entrepreneurial training, business expertise, industry mentorship, access to funding, access to world-class facilities, and co-location with some of the world's leading quantum researchers in order to enable early-stage quantum technology ventures to thrive and grow. Duality is supported by both a Governing Board and a Technical Advisory Committee. Now in its second year, the Director will be charged with growing the program's operational effectiveness and ensuring its long-term financial stability.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the execution of all educational programming and operations of the accelerator-incubator program. Collaborates with the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) and its leadership to ensure the program is run and operated consistently with the Polsky Center's other premier programs and CQE's goals, to satisfy established key performance indicators, manage Duality's Program Manager and support the program's long term strategy.
  • Oversees Duality's finances through managing the budget for the education, programming, and associated operations of the accelerator - incubator, as well as consistent engagement with the program's existing founding partners and its corporate sponsors. Initiate new initiatives to expand the number of financial sponsors and grow the program's financial support. As part of this effort and in coordination with Chicago Booth, University ARD teams, and the Chicago Quantum Exchange, works to engage additional strategic partners and sponsors. These efforts may include outreach to new corporate sponsors and ongoing donor stewardship.
  • Formalizes the operational and programmatic elements of Duality. Creates an annual program calendar with clearly defined milestones and metrics to measure internal operational success.
  • Collaborates with CQE leadership and the Duality's Deputy Director to ensure a shared vision for the program. Establishes clear operational responsibilities between the Director and Deputy Director with an eye toward collaboration and increased effectiveness.
  • Supports ongoing external and internal marketing strategies to raise national and international awareness of the accelerator program, including proactively identifying speaking/presentation roles at conferences and opportunities to be featured in national media outlets. Collaborates with the Polsky Center and CQE marketing teams on the content for all print and web materials, such as posters, brochures, flyers, surveys, and web pages.
  • Manages the annual cohort application process, including review of applications and selection of startups into the program.
  • Supports each startup participating in the program through consistent communication, quality programming execution, events, and by drawing upon appropriate resources to connect participants with a network of mentors and investors. Solicits feedback from teams on their satisfaction with the program.
  • Oversees communication with all accelerator constituents, including business liaisons, coaches, mentors, student interns, sponsors, and others involved with the program.
  • Oversees the existing mentorship program bringing in external leaders with business, technical and domain expertise to mentor, advise and guide startups in the program.
  • Oversees the curriculum, selection of instructors, and quality of educational programming.
  • Collaborates with relevant Polsky Center and CQE staff to oversee events and programming execution/logistics.
  • Oversees contractual engagement with startups participating in the program as well as individual contributors, facilities, non-profit partners, industry partners, and founding partners.
  • Evaluates program success through feedback, data collection, goal setting, and metric tracking.
  • Creates agendas, coordinates meetings, and prepares a quarterly progress report for the Governing Board, outlining financial results and operational progress. Prepares a quarterly progress report for the Technical Advisory Committee outlining operational progress twice annually. Engages both bodies in the approval process for cohort acceptance into the program.
  • Attends events as a representative of the Polsky Center, the quantum accelerator, and a collaborator of the Chicago Quantum Exchange, and to build and maintain relationships, stay up to date on entrepreneurial initiatives and accelerator programs, and participate in programming hosted by external partners as they relate to the goals and purpose of the quantum accelerator.
  • Implements objectives, as well as some long-term strategic plans respective to the department's focus.
  • Maintains external partners to advance strategic priorities. Communicates and collaborates with internal and external community members and leadership to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Master's degree or PhD in the sciences or business.

Experience:
  • At least five years of experience in startup accelerator management or other directly related experience.
  • Experience working with scientists/researchers in the sciences strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting research, startups, initiatives or projects in science and technology fields, like quantum.
  • Experience working with diverse campus constituencies and populations.

Working Conditions
  • Travel between Hyde Park, downtown Chicago, and 53rd Street.
  • Travel outside of the Chicago-area and/or internationally.
  • This position is currently expected to work a minimum three days per week in the office.
