Collects, organizes, analyzes, interprets and ensures accuracy of data in support of Data Science, Actuarial and enterprise data needs. Serves as a liaison between Data Science, Actuarial, Information Systems, and other business units. Participates in a team to develop and employ methods to estimate and predict outcomes. Provides data to support actuarial analysis including pricing, reserving and regulatory reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:

The levels are progressive and build on the previous level's responsibilities and tasks.

  • Collect and organize data from various internal and external sources to prepare database platforms for report generation, statistical and actuarial analysis and data mining projects.
  • Perform analyses for the Data Science and Actuarial group, including using standard procedures for data collection, sampling, maintenance, and presentation of information.
  • Develop, deploy and maintain diagnostic reports and dashboards that assess and monitor enterprise, operating company and business unit performance and results on an ongoing basis.
  • Provide data modeling support for Data Science analysis and Actuarial analysis.
  • Establish ownership of key data fields:
  • Create, classify and document data definitions (e.g. "what is a loss ratio?").
  • Create, implement, and assess appropriate data controls (e.g. reasonability checks, dollar/count controls, field requirements).
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS FOR DATA ENGINEER II:
  • Provide support to Data Services where necessary, particularly in support of Actuarial and Data Science data assets.
  • Perform complex data/statistical studies, including using standard procedures for collection, sampling, maintenance, analysis, and presentation of information.
  • Anticipate potential questions and implement the most effective way to answer business questions/address challenges.
  • Prepares and delivers reports and presentations with a level of detail appropriate for the intended audience for one-off analyses. Reassess data, tools, report methodologies and delivery methods to ensure continuous process improvement.
  • Act as a resource guide and provides support to the Actuarial and Data Science department.
  • Provides guidance to others to facilitate operations.

  • Participate and lead discussions with other departments in regards to data quality, usage, and diagnostics.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:

Data Engineer I
  • Demonstrated SQL skills.
  • Ability to debug code, review logic and recommend improvement.
  • Ability to use extraction, transformation and load (ETL) tools like Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services.
  • Demonstrated ability to use programming to engineer solutions to tasks.
  • Ability and proficiency in the use of company standard software specific to position.General familiarity with the following software is desirable: SQL (particularly SQL Server) and Microsoft Office tools. Some familiarity with R and Python is beneficial.
  • Ability to learn new programming languages.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Ability to comprehend the broad application of corporate goals and effectively communicate their relationship to departmental and individual objectives.

Data Engineer II
  • Demonstrated SQL skills with speed and accuracy.

  • Solid programming skills including the ability to connect multiple and diverse data stores quickly and accurately, and proficient coding that is clear and well documented.
  • Ability to automate repeatable processes.
  • Knowledge of a number of coding tools and ability to select the correct tool for each case.
  • Knowledge of basic insurance topics, e.g., earned premium, incurred loss, loss development, difference between calendar, policy and accident year.
  • Demonstrated communication skills proven by listening well and asking appropriate questions.
  • Basic understanding of project management.
  • Basic customer service skills.
  • Expert level understanding of data architecture as it relates to business processes
  • Possesses understanding of statistical principles and practices.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in a variety of database platforms, data acquisition techniques, business intelligence and analysis tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental procedures, workflows and systems.
  • Ability to lead and direct others by example.
EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in business, insurance, computer science, actuarial science, statistics, mathematics or related field. Additional training/education in computer applications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Continuous learning, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy, is required. Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.
EXPERIENCE:
Data Engineer I With proper education credentials, no experience is required; however, experience working with data in an insurance environment is preferred.
Data Engineer II Two years of experience working with data in an insurance environment is required. Experience with statistics and data analysis, experience using various database platforms, data acquisition techniques, and business intelligence and analysis tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office/remote setting with no unusual hazards. Minimal travel.
