Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Position Summary:

Responsible for assuring that all specimens brought to the laboratory are accurately identified (by name and specimen type), sorted and labeled for testing. Assigns an identifying bar coded number to a test request form and sees that all specimens received match the identification on the form and that all requests are processed properly. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to include department programs, quality control, quality assurance and safety.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Accurately handles and accessions cytology specimens and occasionally histology specimens
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling
  • Correctly identifies proper media used for specimen fixation
  • Accessions, labels and directs specimens through the histology and cytology lab
  • Accurately enters all patient demographics, test codes and physician information from the requisition into Antrim and CoPath, the laboratory's computer program.
  • Discards old specimens by date received.
  • Processes Gynecologic and Non-Gynecologic specimens onto a slide and performs staining according to procedure.
  • Ensures quality of departmental resources and laboratory services
  • Understands and follows all safety, infection control, and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen guidelines.
  • Participates in departmental safety and quality assurance programs.
  • Utilizes appropriate supplies with minimal waste.
  • Promotes excellent service to internal and external customers.
  • Communicates with laboratory staff and other department staff members to ensure quality patient care.
  • Maintains and supports a service oriented relationship with staff members.
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA requirements by respecting and maintaining the confidentiality of information relative to patients and clients.
  • Strives to maintain a positive work environment and keeps work area neat and clean.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned.
  • Attends all in house training and meetings as requested.
  • Prepares specimens for send outs when needed.
  • Follows Quality Control guidelines when preparing samples.
  • Archives and locates missing specimens, blocks and slides.
  • Pull daily pending lists for Non-Gynecologic Cytology, Gynecologic Cytology, Gynecologic Molecular testing and Human Papilloma Virus testing.
  • Assists with administrative duties including, but not limited to, faxing/receiving reports, auditing accessions, calling clients to rectify histology and cytology specimen problems, typing word documents, organizing paperwork.
  • Prepares and organizes slides for review by Cytotechnologist/s and pathologist/s
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED Proficient data entry skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently, be attentive to detail, and provide quality work. Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology related to blood collection.
  • Ability to operate medical tools and equipment in carrying out phlebotomy procedures.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of employee, patient, client, and company information at all times.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws: federal and state regulations, including CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, Safety, and OSHA Regulations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Physical Requirements:
Frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and talking. Occasional sitting, reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers. Light to medium lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires visual acuity.

Work Conditions:
Environmentally controlled laboratory and medical office environment with constant exposure to biological, sharp instruments, and chemical hazards. Fast-paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations. Ability to adapt easily to changing work schedules and work overtime occasionally, as needed.

Reporting Structure:
Reports directly to the Cytology Supervisor and/or the Histology Manager for this area; no direct reports.
