Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of the International Programs Office (IPO), the Coordinator for Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of dynamic and creative communication plans for IPO, with focus on study-abroad recruitment and student success, the promotion of IPO activities and events, and support for IPO's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and community. The role has primary responsibility for managing IPO's website, written communications, and social media.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee development and content management of the IPO website, social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.), brochures and other print materials, internal communication vehicles (newsletter, blog, Alumni news, annual reports, etc.), news and public relations, and external advertising campaigns and communication activities. Lead the development and publication of the annual Global Report.
  • Lead the development of annual communication and marketing plans, with the collaboration of IPO unit heads and other stakeholders. Regularly evaluate effectiveness of marketing and communication activities, updating or changing plans as needed to achieve goals.
  • Implement Education Abroad marketing and recruitment activities. Identify populations of prospective students and create and manage marketing activities that utilize customer relationship management (CRM) software, multiple social media channels, print and electronic direct marketing, the IPO website and events.
  • Serve as IPO media contact and oversee communications about the activities of IPO faculty, students, alumni and staff. Research and write feature stories, news releases and promotional materials. Prepare newsletters and bulletins using email marketing software. Develop and oversee IPO branding. Coordinate with outside vendors for production of materials. Support communication for development activities as needed.
  • Support and publicize events (e.g., International Student Orientation, Education Abroad Fair, photo and video contests), guest speakers, seminars, and other IPO activities. Prepare and distribute event communications, and track event effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with, and serve as liaison with other UMass offices, such as University Relations, to coordinate communications, website, and marketing. Provide advice to IPO leadership and staff about communication opportunities, consistent messaging, and appropriate collaboration or approval.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor showing adaptability and flexibility to accomplish goals.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, graphic design, media studies, or related field.
  • Over three years of experience in communications, brand management, or marketing.
  • Excellent planning, project management, and facilitation skills with high-level attention to detail and quality.
  • Experience working collaboratively. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and sustain productive relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to construct compelling promotional copy as appropriate for the intended audiences; demonstrated experience in developing and managing communication strategies for interdisciplinary initiatives and projects.
  • Experience producing, editing, and writing online and print publications and promotional materials. Proven ability to conduct research and interview subjects for writing assignments.
  • Experience with digital marketing, social media content creation across a variety of platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.), and design and management of websites.
  • Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master's degree in marketing, communication, journalism, or related field.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience living, working, or travelling internationally.
  • Experience or advanced knowledge of photo and video editing.
  • Good familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong design sense.
  • Understanding of current technology and software relevant to program marketing and communications, such as Salesforce, Marketing Cloud, or similar. Understanding of the potential of new technologies to advance goals of the position.
  • Good knowledge of Google Analytics and Google Apps.
  • Physical Demands/Working Conditions

    Typical office environment activity.

    Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, 8:30AM to 5:00PM.
  • May be required to do occasional day or overnight off-campus travel.
  • May be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
