The Cerebrovascular Laboratory (CVL) in the University of Iowa Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Associate (RA). The RA will work under the guidance and leadership of principal investigator (PI) Santiago Ortega-Gutierrez, MD, MSc. to help the lab reach its research goal of providing insights, expanding the scientific knowledge and improving the outcomes of patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic diseases affecting the brain and spinal cord.

This position will manage the research team and laboratory operations, including organizing and scheduling, maintaining clinical databases, coordinating data transfer, independently troubleshooting basic organization and technical problems, and using basic data curation and analysis while under the supervision of the PI.

The types of research projects will be based on the Research Associate's (RA) skill set, as well as available, ongoing funding. A highly motivated RA may be extended additional opportunities for semi-independent projects with authorship on peer-reviewed publications.

Duties Include:

  • Organizing schedules of study participants
  • Organizing and scheduling meetings with internal and external collaborators
  • Maintaining clinical databases and keeping information up to date
  • Coordinating data transfer (i.e., imaging files) with collaborating centers
  • Adjudication of outcomes based on imaging evaluation after appropriate training
  • Promoting the activities of the laboratory through social media platforms
  • Conducting research projects
  • Assisting with writing manuscripts and grant applications
  • Learning and using basic data curation and analysis to answer clinical questions under the supervision of the PI.
  • Arrange and plan weekly activities
  • Develop and structure the clinical laboratory
  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, maintain the validity and integrity of research data
  • Use of medical technical skills to obtain, analyze, and archive data
  • Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator, an optional opportunity for semi-independent projects and authorship
  • Manage laboratory meetings and organization including communications with vendors, collaborators, and visitors
  • Assist with submissions and revisions of grants and laboratory protocols
  • Monitor compliance with patient-protected information and regulatory guidelines
  • Order and maintain lab equipment, supplies, clinical data, and imaging files
  • Maintain and update lab protocols and data
  • Monitor accounts, expenditures, and reconciliation of accounts
  • As laboratory expands, will assist PI in providing direction and training to students and newer employees

Percent of Time: 100%

Please note: This is a specified term position that will last 12 months. An extension may be reviewed after the initial 12 months but is not guaranteed.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-3 years of lab research or clinical trials research experience
  • Prior experience and competence with clinical research techniques, including manuscript writing, data curation, imaging file administration and transfer, imaging analysis and adjudication, statistical analysis, and team management.
  • Prior experience with some form of imaging software (PACS), including imaging transfer and administration. Alternative expertise also accepted, including video recording, video editing, figure creation, image editing, etc.
  • Prior experience and competence with clinical databases including data depuration, summary, and analysis.
  • Evidence of a dedication to completing tasks and willingness to work at agreed upon times is critical.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate (written and spoken) effectively with collaborators.
Desired Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge and experience with R (or equivalent) coding and/or clinical/imaging data analysis.
  • Prior experience in clinical research with patient or basis scientific data, with demonstrated interest in the field of cerebrovascular diseases.
