Summary of Duties:

The Associate Director is responsible for all aspects of planning and implementing strategic public relations activities for the Allen School's multi-million dollar portfolio in the US and in multiple countries (currently 13) to impact positive global health research outcomes. The Associate Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading stakeholder engagement in Allen School activities programs as well as managing implementation teams. The Associate Director will plan operations, budgeting and allocation of resources, implementing and evaluating a variety of global health advocacy and outreach activities related to Allen School research programs and platforms. This leadership position has delegated authority and is responsible for managing in-country stakeholder advocacy efforts and communication strategies. The Associate Director has delegated authority to recommend hiring of staff, establish job performance standards, evaluate job performance, and take corrective action if performance is not acceptable. This position is also responsible for training, assigning and scheduling work, and acting upon leave requests.

The Associate Director will create and maintain effective working relationships with federal government funding agencies, international and domestic NGOs, and academic partners, and coordinating work with international coalitions and industry networks as required. This position will also lead interfacing with multiple public relations channels across many partners' knowledge management systems, and online platforms.

The Associate Director is responsible for developing systems and procedures for managing WSU and in-country staff and coordinating advocacy of major extramural research projects having international components and partners.

This position will be primarily based at our WSU Pullman Campus; however, remote/hybrid opportunities may be available and can be discussed during the interview process.


Required Qualifications:

  • Position requires a Master's degree in relevant field of international relations and three (3) years' progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified within the project specialty, including familiarity with efforts to build global capacity to address infectious diseases, which has included at least two (2) years of management experience..

  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • The Associate Director must be able to travel internationally for extended periods of time (up to 3 consecutive weeks).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional preferred qualifications include leadership experience in global health or international development, experience in research project advocacy and promotion management, and ability to work collaboratively with international institutions.

  • Strong familiarity with US federal funding partners such as CDC, NIH, NIAID, and USAID.

  • Experience in developing and disseminating public affairs guidance and experience working with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNFAO, OIE, and in-country INGOs desirable.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying laws, rules, policies, and procedures.

  • Experience in crisis communications management.

  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in strategic planning, organizational design, implementation and tracking, including, developing, and implementing budget and allocation of resources, managing public relations and advocacy for a variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated experience in multi-lateral cooperation, cultural, and diplomatic skills.

This is a temporary position. (DEEP VZN project intended scope is 2021-2026)
Temporary End Date: This is a temporary position expected to end 4 years after the start date. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
