Student Engagement


Primary Position Function/Summary

Provide oversight of the Student Sustainability Committee activities, including the SSC funds. Serve as a liaison to the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) and other campus sustainability partners.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Group Advising Services & Sustainability Program Creation

  • Supports students and student organizations focused on environmental sustainability.
  • Collaboratively design and implement advising services for students involved in environmentally focused registered student organizations (RSOs) utilizing student development and leadership practices and theories.
  • Develop and maintain collaborations with campus and community stakeholders to design advising services that meet the needs of student communities.
  • Collaborate with iSEE and SSLC in designing sustainability programs for all Illinois students.
Education & Outreach
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to increase the practice of sustainable behaviors and enhance awareness of campus sustainability initiatives in order to foster a culture of sustainable decision making and action at UIUC.
  • Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations (schools, districts, management) critical to program success.
  • Collaborate to broader campus sustainability efforts, including iCAP, iSEE, and SSLC efforts.
Fiscal Management & Administration
  • Provide operational, fiscal and personnel for Student Sustainability Committee activity.
  • Hire, train and supervise SSC Coordinator and student staff.
  • Develop strategic and creative methods to incorporate student input in feedback in designing new sustainability policies.
  • Gauge effectiveness of the Student Sustainability Committee from student leaders and community feedback. Implement improvements to processes and programs as needed.
Assessment and Evaluation
  • Conduct regular program evaluations and coordinate objectives with Student Affairs and University goals.
  • Coordinate the production of reports for internal and external units.
Education:

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, business or environmental studies, or related field.
Preferred:
  • Master's degree in college student affairs, environmental studies, education, student affairs, or relevant field.
Experience:

Required:
  • One year of experience in environmental administration.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising professional and/or student staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading meetings and facilitating processes.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and public.
  • Experience managing multiple assignments and projects successfully in a fast paced, politically charged environment.
  • Experience with environmental sustainability work.
Preferred:
  • Budgeting and accounting practices.
  • Grant writing and management.
  • Experience in advising student groups.
  • Experience coordinating programs and activities within a college or university setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience and knowledge with current sustainability and environmental issues and trends, particularly in the context of higher education and resource management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of campus community, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively one-to-one, in small groups, and in public speaking contexts.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/1/2022. Salary range for this position is $52,000 - $56,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
