About the Position:

The Assistant Director of Facility Operations and Aquatics provides oversight of student employees (Aquatics, Dedman Center Operations, Special Events), instructional programming, and aquatics operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, develop, and assess student and part-time temporary staff for the aquatics program, special events, and Dedman Center operations and member services. This is to include the certification of lifeguards, continuing education for lifeguards, and department-wide safety trainings.
  • Manage revenue generating instructional programs ensuring appropriate staffing coverage, adherence to SMU policies, department standards and protocols, local/state code and laws, and industry standards and best practices.
  • Supervise, manage and lead aquatics operations and services to include the effective and efficient operation of the indoor recreational swimming pool and outdoor fountain pool. Provide assistance with overall management of 170,000 sq. ft. recreation center.
  • Fiscal responsibility for the aquatics budget to include payroll, procurement, maintenance, and invoicing. Fiscal responsibility for the Dedman Center Operations Staff to include payroll.
  • When applicable, evening and weekend work may be required to ensure proper staffing coverage of the pool, special events and facility, which can include emergency situations.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's is required. A Master's degree is preferred. A degree in Recreation and Leisure, Sports Management, Higher Education Administration, Business or a related field is preferred.

Two years professional work experience is required. One to two years professional experience managing an aquatics facility or facility operations to include internships or graduate assistantships is required. Three to four years professional experience managing facility operations, membership services, aquatics facility to include graduate assistantships is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. A strong customer service orientation and strong listening skills are essential.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills. Must also be able to work independently as well as to work collaboratively with others.

Demonstrated knowledge of aquatics industry standards or best practices required.

Knowledge of student development theory is preferred.

Knowledge of event management practices and/or experience is desirable.

Candidate must possess a Lifeguard Certification.

LGI/WSI certification is preferred. Certified Pool Operator is desirable.

Candidate must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including MS Outlook.

Familiarity and knowledge of Innosoft Fusion is preferred.
