If you like working in a fast-paced environment with 24/7 operations, th e City of Boise is recruiting Airfield Maintenance Specialist I employees.
This position:

  • Maintains the operations, maintenance, and integrity of the City of Boise airfield in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations
  • Performs under the direction of a working supervisor who inspects the work in progress and upon completion
  • Works 10 hr shifts Friday - Monday

Essential Functions

Operates heavy construction equipment to maintain airport infields, runways, and taxiways. Performs stormwater inspections, reporting, and maintenance. Backfills trenches, clean out canals and ponds, levels and prepares the ground for seeding, performs brush and weed removal, mows all infields and outside airport properties, sweeps runways, taxiways, ramps, and all movement and non-movement areas to eliminate foreign object debris (FOD). Hauls topsoil, rock, gravel, and sand to different locations for Airport projects. Operates utility work machines with buckets, line grinders, power broom, and fork attachments during various construction jobs and cleanup. Drives water trucks to maintain the compaction and control dust on roads and parking lots during times of construction. Loads and unloads different types of vehicles using forklifts. Excavates trenches for the installation of pipes, conduits, and cables. Operates various snow removal equipment. Utilizes vacuum trucks to remove FOD to stay in compliance with stormwater regulations and minimize debris and sediment runoff. Applies herbicides and pesticides to airport grounds. Responds to any type of spills on the airfield. Provides escort services in SIDA areas. Responds to incidents and performs safety inspections. (50%)

Paints runways, taxiways, commercial ramps and gates, general aviation ramps, roadways, and pavement signs. Cleans and preps surfaces prior to painting. Mixes paint to match colors for proper FAA specifications. Applies glass beads to all colored paint surfaces to meet the required reflectivity. Performs general maintenance, inspection, and light repair of mowers, tractors, cultivators, loaders, sweepers, and other specialized equipment. Diagnoses and analyzes equipment problems or failures. (30%)

Utilizes animal control tools according to specific regulations to ensure runways and taxiways are clear of wildlife. Applies methods of wildlife control. (10%)

Conducts FAA certification inspections and implements required corrective actions. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of experience working with heavy equipment or general maintenance experience
Knowledge
  • Understanding of airfields, taxiways, runways, movement, and non-movement areas
  • Ground and tower radio with proper etiquette
  • Safe operations and understanding of minor airfield maintenance equipment, dump trucks, bulldozers, front end loaders, backhoes, snowplows, and relevant equipment
  • Implements related to painting equipment and tools, stencils for Surface Movement Guidance Control Systems (SMGCS) and runway and taxiway markings, and compass rose lines
  • Lighting, circuitry, signs and electrical system maintenance
  • Relevant FAA and FAR regulations
  • Metal fabrication and welding and a wide array of hand tools
  • Animal control methods, herbicide and pesticide application, entry-level trade, construction, and groundskeeping skills
Ability
  • Obtain a Boise Airport SIDA badge
  • Operate vehicles safely and efficiently during times of low visibility and heavy fog
  • Utilize communication equipment to coordinate with other vehicles and control towers
  • Work a rotating on-call shift
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all City of Boise employees and the public
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion, understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance, and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Capable of operating vehicles safely and having an acceptable driving record
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • 5 years of experience working with heavy equipment in an airport environment
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to all areas of the facility

In this position, you will work with your supervisor to obtain the licenses and certifications while on probation. If needed, your probationary period will be extended by 3 months to allow you the time required to obtain the following licenses and certifications successfully:
  • Idaho Class A commercial driver's license
  • Idaho Pesticide Operators License issued by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture
  • International Society of Arboriculture Certification as an Arborist and/or Tree Worker
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes including a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
  • Driving Record Check
  • Transportation Security Administration background check (SIDA)

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds, and rarely lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds. The noise level is always moderate, frequently loud and occasionally very loud. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wet and humid conditions, and areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, and work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Work is performed in and around ice, snow, traffic, uneven surfaces, walkways, wind, wildlife, insects, wet surfaces, and slippery surfaces. Additional environmental conditions include arc flash, welding spatter, welding smoke, molten metal, and high-pressure fluids.
This position works extended shifts (more significant than 12 hours), requiring incumbents to respond to work within one hour for snow removal or emergency response situations.
