Position Overview:

The AFR Health & Safety Manager will be responsible for all aspects of health and safety for Sapphire Americas operations as we continue to grow our alternative fuels, alternative raw materials and binders business. This position requires a deep understanding of process safety principles, regulations, and best practices, as well as the ability to implement and manage process safety programs effectively. The individual will continuously monitor and improve OH&S performance through development and improvements of SOPs at Alternative Fuels (AF) pre-processing sites, through strong, frequent communication, implementation of corrective actions for identified risks and regional OH&S advocacy. Ensures an effective, risk focused OH&S program is implemented at all Sapphire Americas pre-processing sites.

What you'll contribute to the team:

  • Works closely with the President of Sapphire Americas, Site Operational Managers, and other leaders to determine safety priorities and needs across all operating locations.
  • Provide subject matter expertise through designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive process safety programs aligned with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, codes, and standards related to process safety.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments and hazard analyses for new and existing processes, equipment, and facilities. Identify potential hazards, assess risk levels, and recommend and implement appropriate control measures to mitigate risks.
  • Establish and maintain an effective process safety management system (PSMS). Develop and implement procedures, guidelines, and policies to support process safety objectives. Regularly review and update the PSMS to address emerging risks and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the Management of Change (MOC) process is followed when making changes or adjustments to existing processes or procedures.
  • Actively support preventative injury initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement of AGC's safety culture and be visible at the sites, coaching, teaching, and mentoring.
  • Accompanies inspectors during inspections when possible and maintains all required records regarding safety activities.
  • Recommend purchases of safety equipment, and maintains and distribute supplies.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to verify compliance with process safety standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of process safety measures and identify areas for improvement.
  • Conducts or coordinates industrial hygiene monitoring for all required locations and conducts compliance-related assessments and surveys (i.e. noise, dust, etc.)
  • Supports operations managers and supervisors during incident investigations in cooperation with workers' compensation insurance carriers and legal requirements.
  • Completes records regarding accidents and injuries, and inputs required data into Riskonnect; the Risk Management, Health and Safety Database (RMHS).
  • Ensures plant responsiveness from first aid through life-threatening emergency procedures and manages first aid and CPR training programs regularly for employees.
  • Manages and maintains records for the Life-Saving Rules to ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, programs, and federal, state, and local statutes and regulations.
  • Analyze employee and contractor safety data and conduct risk assessments; develop and implement a safety performance improvement plan.
  • Coordinate the BU safety program to meet overall company safety requirements through initiation and promotion of day-to-day safety policies and development and delivery of safety training activities for employees and management.
  • Coordinate communications of occupational hazards and risks to both managers and the workforce and actively works with BU Leaders to minimize risks and hazards.
  • Develop and deliver safety training material; ensure a records tracking system is in place. Prepare and maintain internal and external reports.
  • Participate in the investigation of serious incidents and injuries and advise in the preparation of material and evidence for an organization to use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Lead and help others to lead root cause investigations; develop and help others to develop corrective actions; monitor the completion of corrective actions.
  • Actively participate in the corporate safety network; leverage expertise to other facilities and help develop corporate standards, best practices, and guidance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

To succeed in this position you will need:

  • Bachelor's/University Degree preferred.
  • CSP, CRSP and or CIH preferred.
  • 7 or more years of minimum experience
  • Experience in alternative fuel health and safety practices
  • Sound knowledge of the ACM per large industrial manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience with local, state/provincial and federal laws and other government compliance regulations, etc.
  • Ability to be responsive and persuasive at all levels of the organization.
  • Effective communication and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects/priorities.
  • Strong customer focus and sense of urgency to business needs.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to coach employees and management through complex issues and make recommendations
What to expect in a cement environment:

Work to be performed in a shop environment as well as outdoor exposure throughout the plant. Mild exposure to cement dust, heat, cold, and noise requires compliance with specified safety guidelines and procedures. Exposure to high elevations of up to 250 feet in height. Exposure to all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.
  • Physically able to climb ladders and scaffolds and work upon platforms.
  • Travel up to 75% of the time
