Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Operations, Access Coordinator works with all the schools and departments in the University community regarding accommodation planning and provision for persons with disabilities; provides advice, advocacy, and referrals to students, faculty, staff, and guests with disabilities with regard to accessibility and reasonable accommodations; serves as a resource to the University community regarding compliance with current disability legislation (i.e. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended).

Essential Functions

  • Manages a dynamic and diverse caseload of University students and employees with a range of disabilities and accommodation requirements. Examples include students and employees with disabilities such as AD/HD, Visual and Hearing, Learning, Neurological, Medical, Mobility, and Psychological disabilities.
  • Interprets diagnostic documentation (i.e. medical, psychological, psychiatric, and educational records) to determine appropriate accommodation eligibility of qualified students and employees.
  • Identifies and provides developmentally appropriate support, advocacy, counseling and referrals for a range of academic, professional, social, psychological, and medical concerns.
  • Evaluates and prioritizes case management demands while accurately maintaining contact notes, collecting work output data, generating accommodation eligibility notifications, and producing periodic performance reports.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with the campus community, including faculty, advisors, academic deans, campus mental health professionals and student affairs professionals.
  • Interprets and communicates relevant disability legislation and University policies and procedures to students, employees, faculty and supervisors.
  • Actively promotes a collaborative and supportive work environment with a commitment to the principles of social justice and inclusivity.
  • Responsible for clear and timely communication via email, letters, and telephone.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrates capacity, skill and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
  • Works collaboratively with other campus stakeholders to fulfill the mission of Student Affairs and Campus Life.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to conflicts of interest and behaves in ways consistent both with law and with University policy.
  • Contributes toward creating a positive and respectful workplace defined by personal and professional competence, integrity, and collaboration.
  • Understands and contributes to implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a respectful, inclusive environment that is supportive of diversity.
  • Uses access to sensitive and/or not yet public university related information only in the performance of the responsibilities of position and exercises care to prevent unnecessary disclosure to others.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor's Degree and more than 3 years of relevant experience (preferably in higher education), student affairs, human services, special education, disability studies, rehabilitation counseling, social work or counseling.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse populations across race, class, gender, sexuality, age, religion, ability, etc.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and accommodation requirements of people with disabilities, with a focus on social, workplace, and educational experiences.
  • Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as amended, section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), and other relevant federal, state, and local legislation; understanding of how legislation is applied to the higher education setting.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for job related purposes, and work evening and weekend hours as required.
